Associate Lawyer
CurrentWorking with the corporate and commercial law group at Cunningham Swan, I help support businesses and provide advice on legal matters including incorporation and corporate structuring, mergers and acquisitions, financing, and general contract and commercial needs. The corporate team at Cunningham Swan services large and small businesses at all stages of growth throughout Eastern Ontario.
Associate
As an Associate in the Labour and Employment Group at Templeman LLP, one of eastern Ontario's premier full-service law firms, I commonly assist both employees and employers in complex labour disputes. On the employee side, this includes managerial and other senior-employee wrongful dismissal actions. On the employer side, this includes advising on intricate human resources and labour relations matters and representing employers in Court and Tribunal proceedings. I have also gained experience advising employers on workplace policies including alcohol and drug policy reviews arising out of the legalization of cannabis, privacy policy reviews arising out of the introduction of breach notification to federal privacy laws, and workplace harassment and violence policies. In addition to my focus on labour and employment law matters, I also routinely work with our commercial and construction litigation group to provide assistance to and advocate for businesses in a wide variety of matters throughout Ontario.
Student At Law
As a Student at Law at one of Eastern Ontario's premier full-service law firms, I have gained valuable experience in many areas of practice. Since beginning my articles, I have had a focus on Labour, Employment & Human Rights, and Commercial Litigation. I have maintained primary carriage of several files and have drafted materials and helped develop litigation strategies in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, Ontario Labour Relations Board, Ontario Court of Justice, and Small Claims Court. One of the highlights of my articling experience was being entrusted with understanding the nuances of cannabis legalization and developing both internal and client-facing materials respecting the impact of cannabis legalization on Ontario's workplaces. These materials led me to delivering a client presentation on this topic in the fall of 2018. As a member of the team at Templeman LLP, I have been fortunate to advocate for our clients, contributing to favourable settlements and top-tier advocacy.
Career Development Assistant
The Career Development Office at Queen's Faculty of Law provides vital services to the student body related to the recruitment and licencing processes in Ontario. As a Career Development Assistant I am involved first-hand with helping my colleagues build their job applications and develop their professional networks. The perennial aspects of my job are helping first- and second-year students craft resumes and cover letters, assisting the Career Development Counsellors host sessions for law students related to career development, and helping out with important recruitment-related events such as On-Campus Interviews. As a full-time staff member in the summer between my first and second years of Law School I undertook other large projects including a complete update of Queen's Law's articling database which involved extensive research and communication within the legal industry in Ontario. I also wrote a guide on professionalism and networking for law students and hosted a tour of Ottawa-area law firms for students.
Summer Student
Templeman LLP is one of the largest law firms servicing eastern Ontario with offices in Belleville, Kingston, and Brockville. As a Summer Student, I provided assistance to partners and associates at the Kingston and Brockville offices in the areas of labour & employment, insurance defence, commercial and construction litigation, estate litigation, and corporate law. I conducted legal research and formed opinions which I communicated to the supervising lawyers in legal memoranda. I also drafted letters for clients, prepared court documents including drafting Facta, Statements of Claim, Notices of Motion, and Affidavits for proceedings in Superior Court and Small Claims Court and assisted with the closing of a few corporate transactions. While I was involved in many exciting files I was particularly enthusiastic to be entrusted with client communication on a number of occasions. One highlight was a wrongful dismissal case on which I completed a first draft of the Statement of Claim and met and spoke with the client multiple times afterwards as we began assembling an Affidavit of Documents and prepared for a Reply upon receiving the Statement of Defence. This degree of exposure was incredibly valuable experience as a Summer Student.I will be beginning my Articles with Templeman LLP in July, 2018.
Event Assistant
Queen's Event Services is a non-academic office at Queen's University responsible for coordinating and executing client's events on Queen's Campus. In my role as an event assistant I was responsible for ensuring that the client's requests were realized as closely as the facilities would allow and that events ran smoothly. This involved a broad range of demands and an aptitude for adaptability. At an event, I would be the primary logistical contact for the client meaning that I was expected to either know how to solve problems that arose or was able to develop creative solutions to problems in a timely and effective way. Queen's Event Services operates successfully thanks to the input of various on and off-campus partners and maintaining these relationships at events was another important aspect of my role as an Event Assistant. Due to ongoing recognition as an outstanding client service representative and dedicated member of the Event Services team, I was afforded the opportunity to cover for one of my superiors during her maternity leave. This allowed me to do more work behind the scenes with clients and partners which led to a greater appreciation for the hard work that goes into successfully pulling off an event.
Tasting Room Bartender And Assistant Brewer
The Gananoque Brewing Company is a small craft brewery and as a member of the small team that ensured the successful operation of the entire facility, no task was too big or too small. Being knowledgeable about all of the products and providing outstanding customer service was essential to fostering the growth of the company but the operation of the brewery also entailed ensuring the cleanliness of the facilities, maintaining communication with repeat clients, and even hand-labeling bottles and appearing in locally-aired television commercials. My passion and knowledge of the brewing process coupled with frequent acknowledgements of my strong customer service abilities led to me being granted responsibility over the upkeep and operation of a small brewing system for specialty products.
