Why do you go to a concierge? It's because you're hoping to find out about things you wouldn't find on your own. Our profession needs to come to grips with the fact that the traveler of today is much savvier than the traveler of 20 years ago. They already know about the obvious things to do. They are coming to us to get get the inside scoop and to find out about the NOT so obvious things. That means to stay relevant, we need to step up our game. So I make it a rule: at least 50% of my suggestions could not be found in a guidebook. Do that, stay away from the obvious, and even in the digital age, you can still remain relevant to today's traveler. In addition, I don't just focus on where people I help should go. Many times, concierges tend to be reactive rather than proactive, passively giving out information only in response to your direct questions. Not me. Instead I am proactive and I'm not afraid to look at your itinerary and let you know what is missing in your game plan of what to do while you are here. THAT is the difference between a good concierge and a great concierge.
