About Kevin Shields

Kevin Shields is a Passionately Embarrassing Dad and Chief Adventure Officer at The Shields of Faith (aka my family ;-). Colleagues describe him as "Kevin’s passion and insistence on quality is what has driven him since I’ve known him. It was always a pleasure to take problems to Kevin knowing that we would find a creative solution. He is an excellent leader and I would work for him in an instant!" and "When I joined Microsoft in 1999, Kevin was one of my first managers (at the time, he was Product Unit Manager of the Pocket PC team). Over the course of my tenure in the group, I had the opportunity to watch Kevin rise in the organization to the role of GM. Along the way he did an amazing job turning Windows Mobile into a real business for Microsoft, and his leadership was respected and appreciated by those of us in the trenches every day. Having just put over a million miles on airplanes in ~3 years I wanted to shift my, er, pretty maniacal passion and focus.Informally I have had three interrelated goals. First to engage deeply with my family, returning a fraction of the incredible support I had/have received from my epically patient and committed wife (Kristine) and two spectacular kids (Juliette & Nathan). Juliette & Nathan were on the cusp of High School and I feared not establishing the broad and meaningful relationship that I have had with my parents. Second to reengage in activities for which I had set aside my passion such that I could be the best I could the folks relying on me in professionally. I reintroduced myself to the backcountry – backpacking, skiing (and touring), bow hunting – picked up some new passions (kiteboarding) and stopped saying “if only I had the time…” (tinkering on my 1965 Mercury Comet convertible). Third to improve my health and fitness. These goals sort of have reverse order alignment – improve my health… such that I could engage in adventure… with my family.I smile when asked “aren’t you bored?” Time easily filled with stuff I cherish. Road trips with my kids (two college tours w/ Juliette, Japan skiing w/ Nathan), helping my folks move from their home of ~45 years (incredibly emotional), hunting with my dad, helping Nathan test thru multiple levels of Math, editing Juliette’s copious writing. Meals as a family/couple are now the un-rushed norm. I wish I had even more time to spend on these things and people that I love…On the side I do a bit of (informal) consulting – I am fortunate to have folks who seek mentoring on all matter of business, technology, career and life. It is super nice to have these reminders of the special brand of intellectual engagement and problem solving I have enjoyed during my professional adventures to date. Show less
