This study compared existing bus routes to new, GIS optimized bus routes. The new routes reduced bus travel time by 10% and bus driving distance by 12% per morning.

My first opportunity to work as a full time GIS Analyst was with a large team of analysts (about 50 of them) in a fast paced, deadline driven work environment. As a private civil engineering firm, BHC Rhodes demands that very high quality work is finished quickly so they can meet strict deadlines outlined in contracts with their clients. I found that I really enjoyed the work of a GIS Analyst, especially once I got acclimated to the specifics of utility mapping. To complete a given map packet, analysts needed to acquire and combine data from many sources including plat maps, as-builts, AutoCAD drawings, orthographic photos, Google Earth, and existing utility data.

As a teaching assistant for introductory environmental studies lab classes, I conducted the mandatory supplemental lab component of a core undergraduate science course. No University professor was present during lab classes. Each class began with a short lecture I prepared, followed by a lab portion which I oversaw. Once per semester per class, I led students on a field trip to a local stream to perform field data collection. All tests and evaluations, including a field report/research paper, were my responsibility to assign and grade.

This is a position that was created by the Green Impact Zone for me in response to the interest and abilities that I demonstrated to them. I urged them to let me find ways to utilize my GIS education to support the community development initiatives that they were responsible for in Kansas City's urban core. Together, we conceptualized projects that used my research and GIS background to promote investment in the 150 square block area labeled as the Green Impact Zone. One such project was to create an asset based development plan for the area, which began with me mapping all "assets" in the area, and then working closely with Green Impact Zone staff to develop a community development plan around these assets.
