Roles:• Designing best-in-class composite manhole covers using patented Thrubeam® technology. • Developing new products from inception through to completion. • Modifying existing products, mould tools, frames, accessories, etc. for improved performance• Producing detailed technical drawings. • Producing technical documents/instructions for production, assembly and maintenance. • Completing detailed Product Bill of Materials for costing and procurement process.• Quality inspection of product and material samples• Ensuring products meet the quality standards outlined in BS EN124 1994/ 2015.• Maintaining quality of work and records in accordance with ISO 9001/2015.• Optimising process parameters to improve the quality and efficiency of production. • Improving Manufacturing outcomes through a Continual Improvement Process• Maintaining and repair existing facilities to ensure minimal downtime and rejects. • Researching, and implementing new equipment and systems to improve factory capabilities.

During this placement, I was tasked with the development of a gripper system that would transfer hot samples from a furnace to a quenching tank. This system was important for improving uniformity and safety in the handling of these hot samples, increasing the overall accuracy of all quenching trials. This project was self-led and followed the development of the system from initial concept development through to the procurement and pricing stage.

I was originally set to continue my earlier AFRC project here; however, due to issues with research availability and project sponsorship I was instead tasked with helping researchers throughout the AFRC with specific project tasks. This led to me participating in a diverse selection of tasks.

At my first AFRC placement I was given a focused research project involving the measurement of glass lubricant on superalloy billets, before and after forging. This coating was incredibly thin (~50µm) and contact had to be avoided as this would interfere with measurements.

At my first placement I assisted in a number of different projects whilst under close supervision. These projects were largely centred around the nuclear industry. Tasks included the recreation of legacy technical drawings using CAD software and evaluations of structure design using engineering calculations.
