As Coordinator for W.D. Jordan Rare Books and Special Collections library, my work encompasses three key areas: managing and coordinating the reading room, instruction and outreach and cataloguing of rare books and special collections. My instruction work, in addition to classes that come to our reading room, takes me to classrooms at Queen’s University to share relevant components of our collection. It also entails many alumni and community-based initiatives, such as Homecoming and Doors Open Kingston, through which rare book knowledge is shared beyond the institutional context. In my social media work (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter), I promulgate the collection and work of Jordan to over 9,000 followers. Naturally, social media entails interaction with leading rare book libraries the world over, not only broadcasting the Jordan collection but extending a positive, professional image to the world of rare book work being undertaken in Canada. Also part of outreach, Jordan supports a robust exhibit program, with events held throughout the year, and I have successfully curated five exhibits. This outreach through presentations promotes the library's collection to students, faculty and the broader community. Finally, and most significantly, my position involves successfully managing the service point, ensuring that user needs are met, and the collections are handled correctly in the reading room. This work consists of providing reference daily as well as the supervision of library workers and student workers.
