    During my PhD, I led lung B cell studies in a lab with no prior B cell research experience, resulting in a first-author manuscript and 2 grants enabling the lab to continue B cell research. This work identified a novel population of resident memory B cells in the lungs of both mice and humans and demonstrated these cells were essential for immunity to bacterial pneumonia.

    Using data from the SEER Registries, I evaluated cancer trends for a variety of major sites using an age-period-cohort statistical model. In collaboration with senior NIH investigators, I used MATLAB and Joinpoint analyses to project cancer trends through the year 2030. This work was presented to the NCI at a poster session, and resulted in a research letter published in the journal Blood, as well as two abstracts accepted at the ASH 2014 conference and AACR 2015 Annual Meeting.

    I worked on the directed evolution of the enzyme Cytochrome P450 BM3 with the hope of engineering an enzyme producing increased amounts of reactive oxygen species. These ROS may be useful in treatment of disease, simulating defenses produced by the immune system. Simultaneously I worked on characterizing a sensitive and selective probe for hydrogen peroxide that allowed detection of these ROS. My work towards a systematic characterization of the properties of this probe was published in the Journal of Microbial Methods.
