Part of my research involved interviewing Michigan registered nurses, which allowed me to better understand how staffing ratios and shift length are perceived and experienced by the nurses themselves. I was a joint intern between the Michigan Nurses Association and Representative Jon Hoadley, who is the representative for Michigan's 60th district. This joint relationship allowed me to collaborate with a policymaker, so that I could better understand how legislation is carried out at the state level. My position gave me the unique opportunity to understand a piece of health policy both on the ground-- through my work with nurses-- and at the Capital.Writing skills were critical in my position. While at MNA, I worked on two writing projects: a paper summarizing the importance of nursing staff ratios to patient safety, and a script for a public access television show, aimed to educate the public about patient safety in Michigan.
