Legislative InternMichigan Nurses Association Jan 2016 - May 2016Okemos, MiI promoted safer hospitals for Michigan nurses and patients by researching the relationship between staffing ratios and long shifts for registered nurses with adverse patient events. Part of my research involved interviewing Michigan registered nurses, which allowed me to better understand how staffing ratios and shift length are perceived and experienced by the nurses themselves. I was a joint intern between the Michigan Nurses Association and Representative Jon Hoadley, who is the representative for Michigan's 60th district. This joint relationship allowed me to collaborate with a policymaker, so that I could better understand how legislation is carried out at the state level. My position gave me the unique opportunity to understand a piece of health policy both on the ground-- through my work with nurses-- and at the Capital.Writing skills were critical in my position. While at MNA, I worked on two writing projects: a paper summarizing the importance of nursing staff ratios to patient safety, and a script for a public access television show, aimed to educate the public about patient safety in Michigan.
