Welding is complicated....I keep it simple! I am a team leader (Lead, Follow, or Get out of the way!) and a problem solver with an exceptional ability to consolidate existing knowledge on materials and welding, including brazing, soldering and thermal spray-related issues while reaching beyond existing knowledge in identifying, proposing and implementing best-in-class solutions that improve Quality, increase Productivity and reduce Cost, above all eliminate Risk. Here is an example...the welding consumables industry often spends enormous time and effort in developing welding electrodes for high performance applications. Unfortunately, most of this development effort is done by traditional trial and error methods that typically cost a million dollars or more! Instead of trial and error methods, in 2007, I used my very own welding analytics method, trained and mentored 3 Richland High School Junior students (Johnstown, PA) on the metallurgical design of high performance GMAW Electrodes for HSLA-65 steels project. This project received the 2008 Regional Finalist Award at the Siemens Math, Science and Technology competition. The related research was also published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Materials Engineering and Performance, Vol. 17 (2008), No. 06. The welding analytics method used C++ programming to generate "big data" from applicable AWS welding electrode specifications, and used MS Excel spreadsheet to narrow "big data" to one high performance welding electrode composition using well-known metallurgical principles. The above welding analytics method is centered on a novel "constraints based modeling" methodology that eliminated risk in consumable development, reduced development time for recommending an "aim" composition to a week or less, while staying compliant with relevant AWS specification for welding electrodes.
