I develop solutions by accessing the knowledge in large complex multivariate data. I am currently improving the insurance coding of healthcare encounters within the context of unstructured natural language medical documents. Although I have focused on natural language for many years, I have also worked on genetic epidemiology and neuroscience problems with large non-linguistic data.An important part of problem-solving within a complex knowledge domain is working well with a diverse team that includes subject-matter-experts, developers and end-users. As a professor who has always had an interdisciplinary focus, I enjoy learning from others as well as sharing my expertise in a way that informs my team rather than just demonstrates my intellect. A good team should be generating far more light than heat.Technological advances have made what were considered impossible possible almost trivial today. There is often an unappreciated cost to quickly adopting new technologies. For example, it is important to balance stability with performance improvements. A simple solution can be more computationally efficient and robust than a new bleeding edge approach.
