Closed Loop is the first company I started and continues to be the primary focus of my business life.

The Entrepreneurs' Organization (EO) is a Global business network and peer-to-peer learning organization of 12,000+ leading entrepreneurs in 150 chapters and 48 countries.I never thought of myself as an entrepreneur until I joined EO and learned this crazy way of being had a name. EO has made a huge impact on my life. I’m thinking bigger, achieving more, and experiencing more fulfillment since I joined. I’ve been honored to serve on the Board and now as President of the Sacramento chapter of EO.

The Wine Standard was an e-commerce site that sold unique wine gifts and accessories. I launched this venture during the recession in an attempt to diversify, gain some additional e-commerce experience and do something productive while many of our clients went into hibernation. It did OK but not well enough to continue, so I decided to shut it down and refocus on growing Closed Loop.

Portera was my first taste of startup life back during the original dot-com boom. I left HP to join this hot startup that was going to be the Salesforce.com for professional services companies. Unfortunately the technology was a bit ahead of its time and our paying customers were few - facts that became suddenly relevant as were were preparing to go public and the tech sector crashed. So I got laid off - and started Closed Loop later that week.

I like to say I worked at HP when HP was cool. Imagine the CEO of HP being on the cover of Fortune for good reasons. Seriously. It was awesome. That was a long time ago… Still, HP was very good to me. I learned all about computers and networking and was put through a management trainee program that included a battery of personality tests that gave me some practical frameworks for understanding myself and human psychology in general. My love for user experience was born from my time at HP. I’ll always be grateful to Bill and Dave for the company they started and the culture they created.

My first real job after undergrad (and dropping out of law school) was in politics, which turned out to be GREAT training for a career in marketing. I learned how to write, speak, sell, lead, follow and argue. It was intense. While I enjoyed it, I realized it wasn’t where my passions lay, so when a friend from Silicon Valley called and offered me a job at HP I jumped. That was the second best decision of my life.
