Lance is a s*x worker rights advocate, lived experience researcher, and project coordinator at Brown University School of Public Health, where he facilitates intervention sessions on two national randomized control trials. PrEPare for Work (R01), in collaboration with UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, aims to mitigate barriers to PrEP access and adherence for male s*x workers who express interest. Project IMPACT (U01), in collaboration with the Adolescent Medicine Trials Network for HIV/AIDS Interventions, aims to test sexual health counseling paired with behavioral activation among young sexual minority men who use stimulants.He is also pursuing an MPH full-time with a concentration in public health law and policy as a Health Equity Scholar. His focus is on legal interventions that decriminalize s*x workers and people living with HIV, both of which are concepts supported by global human rights organizations. Another initiative, inspired by starting college at age 30, is developing age-friendly higher-education programs. This has included co-founding Brown University's first student club specific to the needs of graduate students interested in pursuing law school.Past experiences include a research and advocacy internship with the S*x Workers Project of the Urban Justice Center, where he helped draft a policy position on national s*x work and privacy laws as well as the organization’s “Research Guide: Conducting Ethical Research on the Sex Trades.” With the support of other s*x workers, he organized the s*x worker-led panel “S*x Worker Rights are Human Rights: Advocacy in Academic Research” at Columbia University. Consulting projects include working with Black & Pink, where he joined forces with nine s*x workers on a national health care, business, and safety toolkit. With Saint Louis University, he participated in a community advisory board to provide feedback on a national study exploring the impact of health policies and legislation on the safety, resiliency, and mental health of s*x workers.A human rights graduate of The School of General Studies of Columbia University, he completed an honors thesis focused on the sparse nature of peer-led outreach created by and for current / former male s*x workers. A journalism graduate of San Diego Mesa College, his published Fresno Bee op-ed “Former Selma Unified student finds the district lacking in LGBTQ awareness” detailed the connection between his adolescent experiences of being bullied and what he found to be a lack of support for other LGBTQ+ students and faculty in his hometown.
