I've been a commercial artist for over forty years. I knew I wanted to be an artist when my third grade teacher took my drawing of a lion and put it up on the bulletin board. She set the target. All I had to do was shoot the arrow. I've been hitting the mark ever since.While attending the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, I took a job at The Boston Globe. When an opening came up for the art department, I was there. The Globe took me under its wing and became my family. It was at the Globe that I became the Editorial Sports Cartoonist. I quickly learned that If you are going to be an editorial cartoonist, you have to check your feelings and friendships at the door. One of the reasons I don't like meeting athletes is because it's easy for me to like people, thereby making it difficult to poke fun at them when I have to...and I have to all of the time!From The Globe, I went to The National Sports Daily. Later, as the internet age transformed sports media I had the opportunity to display my work on ESPN.com's "Quickie Page."These days, my cartoons appear daily on WEEI.com. I also have a weekly radio show on WEEI Sportsradio Network: The Mustard & Johnson Show.They say that comedy and tragedy are so closely related that if the idea is delivered well enough, your audience laughs instead of cries, and cries when laughing doesn't get the job done.
