Project aims to determine potential causes of 2004 outbreak of downy mildew on cucurbit crops in the Southeast United States. Focus on PCR, DNA extraction, and other molecular techniques to characterize single nucleotide polymorphism changes in pathogen DNA.

Samples included isolates from early 1900's onwards, as well as international and local isolates on a variety of different hosts and showed that a population shift occurred in downy mildew on U.S. cucumbers during the 2004 epidemic. Presented at the NC State Undergraduate Research Symposium.
