Laura Ellis has been a radio and audio producer with WFPL since 2004.In 2012, she co-created a weekly podcast called 'Strange Fruit,' focusing on race, gender, and LGBTQ issues. Laura produced Strange Fruit for its first 200 episodes, when she handed over the reins to the show's two hosts. Currently, Laura produces WFPL's 'Curious Louisville' series, an audience-engagement-driven project answering questions about the city, and continues to work on radio features and oversee the overall podcast strategy at WFPL. In 2017, Laura produced a Peabody-Award-winning podcast called 'The Pope's Long Con,' an investigative piece by the Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting, examining the life of Kentucky State Representative Danny Ray Johnson.She was awarded an RTNDA Unity Award in 2012 for her work on 'Defining Fairness,' a nine-part series about diversity and racism within Louisville's LGBTQ community. She was part of a Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting team awarded an Edward R. Murrow Award in 2013 for 'The Man With Many Chances,' which revealed systemic failures that allowed a serial criminal to murder a 17-year-old girl. In 2017, Laura was embedded for a week at the Kentucky State Fair, for an audience-engagement project called 'Fairly Curious.'Laura is a lifelong resident of Louisville, Kentucky.
