As a tutor for AmeriCorps, enriching the educational experience for and instilling a fondness for learning in each student through student success and academic achievement are my primary goals. One-on-one and small group instruction for reading and math allowed me to focus on each student’s area of concern and make a concentrated effort to help them improve on that area and gain confidence in their abilities. Within two terms of service, 88% of students served in this program saw an overall academic growth in their reading levels or math content areas and all students found a stronger sense of faith in their abilities.

Administrative tasks, planning events, managing staff, building community

Working as copy editor for the Concordian expanded on the courses I was taking and allowed me to build on the experience I had acquired in my previous position as opinions editor. Rather than being responsible for one section of the newspaper, the entire paper became my business. Entrusted with that task enabled me to use my fact-checking abilities and basic grammar skills and enhance my fast typing abilities.

Interning with the Women’s Studies Program supplemented the research, computer and writing skills I had gained throughout my academic career. Finding creative and interesting ways to promote events and the program itself were challenging. By taking advantage of the resources available to me, I was able to work with my cohorts to successfully engage Concordia’s student body in the Women’s Studies Program via word-of-mouth, social media and plastering self-designed flyers on every open surface. Through this internship, I was able to build networking and writing skills by connecting with previous women’s studies minors, interviewing each alum, and generating a short biography for the program’s website.
