For nine weeks, I worked on a research project that sought to aid speech pathologists in diagnosing chewing disorders. I worked primarily in Matlab, using tools such as Video Labeler and training CNNs. While there, I also received clinical shadowing experience in the University of Alabama's Speech and Hearing Center while working with their speech pathologists. In addition, we participated in numerous workshops ranging from professional development in research to being civic-minded engineers. This REU was an interdisciplinary collaboration between electrical engineering and speech pathology, giving me the opportunity as an engineer to learn how to better collaborate with colleagues with different academic backgrounds to create a device beneficial to fields outside of my own.
