Spending over 27 years in education, I have experienced many ups and down but I have learned many things that I apply to making the most out of every moment. Allowing children to be empowered to learn and master the necessary skills in ways that interest them. Providing hands on and open ended experiences and facilitating critical thinking allows my students to grow and utilize their creativity while they master the necessary information. I have spent many summers and hours presenting to other educators for Project Construct about using Constructivist theories of learning to provide experiences to their students. Often this allows the students to experiment with supplies, books or natural items to predict what might happen when they ... (they can plan and manipulate the items) and then they hypothesize, develop and change their thinking to fit what they are experiencing, observing and learning. The teacher is there to not spout the information to the students but facilitate and question the students during the experience to help them understand on their own.Inside and outside of the classroom, I help students think and create on their own without boundaries to control them. Whether it is in their writing, manipulating math tools or working with recycling items to create something artistic, I believe that we should empower people to use their talents to the best of their ability. This does not mean that my classroom is a free-for-all. It DOES mean that it's a respectful place for all of us to work on our own level.
