The laboratory is almost entirely automated and I have gained a good proficiency in maintaining the analysers (Beckman Coulter LH750's LH500 and a Coulter DxH Full blood count analyser and slide staining and making apparatus as well as the ACL IL top coagulation analyser). I can also perform basic repairs and know when to refer a problem to the proper technical specialists I also understand the crucial value of quality control and would never even dream of using an instrument without ensuring that it had passed all of its background checks and controls. I also regularly perform equipment checks on remote blood fridges to ensure they are functioning properly and that any units of blood in them need to be and that the hospital blood tracking system is being used, i also collect transfusion confirmation tags and return them to the laboratory to help the lab comply with the MHRA's traceability requirements. The blood transfusion laboratory is a GMP accredited lab and must always strive to meet the vitally important standards set by the MHRA.I have gained a good understanding in the use of the hospital pathology LIMS system (MEDITECH in this case) and can use it to quickly find previous history outstanding requests and problem requests. Strict lab safety rules must be adhered to at all times. Also the trusts data protection rules have been explained to me in full and must always be considered when dealing with patient information. Other hazards in the lab include chemicals such as cell stains. Also strict quality standards are expected from us as patients treatment is very dependent on receiving prompt and clear blood test results. Basic maintenance of the analysers and fixing small errors with the automated systems is another of my duties. All work is done according to SOP's which are followed at all times, I have been involved in making alterations to SOP's if necessary as well.

Working in the compound management department the day to day duties of this job include weighing of compounds ensuring dispatch to departments that order compounds maintaining the clean conditions of work surfaces glassware and metal implements. This requires great care and working to good laboratory safety standards as many of the compounds handled have not been studied yet and their potential effects on the body are not known as well as good quality standards as customers expect to receive precise quantities of uncontaminated samples
