About Liam Chisman
A dedicated senior mechanical project engineer, with a uniquely broad range of experience acquired across the field, but with a particular focus on vacuum, cryogenics, precision engineering, motion systems, geometric tolerancing, vibrations, engines and tribology. After my master's degree in mechanical engineering, for which I was awarded the Mappin Medal for highest overall grade in 2011, the IMechE Institution Best Student award in 2010 and the Siemens’ Prize for Best Group Project in 2010, I moved on to the 'E-Futures' doctoral training course in energy research, gaining a thorough grounding in supply and utilisation technologies, and societal, political and environmental aspects of the energy industry. As part of this course, I completed the majority of a PhD in automotive tribology, but this was paused due to a lab closure. Meanwhile, I fulfilled a multitude of job roles within the university, including being a full-time lab technician & demonstrator, conducting research for Jaguar Land Rover and helping with the delivery of teaching modules. My most major project was the design & construction of an engine test cell, which formed a major research asset to the university. In 2021 I switched industry and joined Diamond Light Source, the UK’s national synchrotron, as a mechanical design engineer. This involved much cryogenic, vacuum and precision design work. More recently I have become a senior mechanical project engineer, currently tasked with managing a project aiming to automate sample handling and storage of cryo-electron microscopy samples. In my spare time I enjoy learning Mandarin & French, playing music (piano, guitar, drums & cello), attempting DIY, and intending to exercise.
Listed skills include Sustainability, Mechanical Engineering, Data Analysis, Research, and 6 others.

Mechanical Design Engineer
Mechanical design engineer for the UK's national synchrotron facility. Providing operational support for current activities alongside research and development of next-generation equipment.Designed the shielding hutch for the new flagship ‘HeXI’ High-energy electron Xtallography Instrument.Designed a new, high throughput, system for handling cryogenic samples and transferring them into the vacuum endstation, for an X-ray beamline.Other projects have included: design and prototyping of a cryogenic continuous rotation joint, serial synchrotron Xtallography equipment development, dynamic error budgeting fundamental research into random disturbances in mechatronics systems.Other activities: frequent OPS support under time pressure, technical drawing group main contributor, lead supervisor of a summer placement student.Key skills developed and demonstrated: cryogenics, design for vacuum, precision motion systems.
Research Assistant
• Conducted valve wear research with Jaguar Land Rover, including rig design and wear analysis.• Designed and built an engine test cell. Work involved directing contractors in installing services (e.g. test cell extraction, water & electrical supply), independent designing of an engine intake system, fuel supply system, exhaust extraction system, driveshaft assembly, clutch controller, throttle controller, data acquisition and combustion analysis system, engine management system and engine cooling system, installing a dynamometer and working with AVL to commission the cell. This project demanded routine problem solving, ingenuity, independent working, perseverance and resilience.
Graduate Teaching Assistant
• Full time lab technician/demonstrator for over a year. Primarily designing dynamics experiments, leading their build, writing LabVIEW control programs, writing and running labs, marking and feedback.• Teaching: Major group project supervisor – leadership and management skills were needed to guide the team to win the Siemens’ Prize for Best Project. Assisted with delivery of ‘Automotive Powertrain’, ‘Advanced Experiments and Modelling’, and ‘Manufacturing Systems’ modules. ANSYS Workbench demonstrator for civil engineering undergraduates.• Public engagement – tribology-focused events for the public and STEM events for A-level students.
