Vehicle Development EngineerPolestar Jun 2021 - Mar 2022Intially starting as a Vehicle Development Engineer to assist the team with my Catia/CAD skills, I progressed into managing the 3D printing and 3D scanning systems for Polestar R&D. This task has included rolling out the systems for use within the business as well as creating processes in order to request and then execute the 3D Prints or scans. This role has given me experience in managing the inventory of materials required for the printer, making sure that the printer operations are maintained as well as setting up the server based system to enable printing remotely. The 3D Printer model is the Stratasys F370, which is an FDM printer. This also means I have extensive experience of using GrabCAD Print as the integrated print software bundled with the printer. While maintaining a printer usage rate of 80% over a period of a couple of months, it was clear that a second printer was required to meet the demand for parts and therefore was introduced to the company as an identical model. With this experience in 3D printing, I have also learnt the different strengths and weaknesses of the useable materials for these printers and use my knowledge on them to select the material based on the "customers" requirements. 3D Scanning has been used extensively for project vehicles as well as benchmarking. The 3D Scanning system used is the Creaform Metrascan 3D and associated HandyProbe. Being a Creaform system, this also includes a large amount of practice using VX Elements. Once the scans have been completed, I also use VXModel (self-taught then officially trained) to post-process the scans to help refine them to the "customers" needs. -
Digital Vehicle EngineerPolestar Nov 2020 - May 2021Being a Digital Vehicle Engineer, I worked mainly in clash detection in order to assist the release process of parts for a prototype build. This meant a substantial use of Teamcenter and Vis-Mockup to perform the clash checks. Once completed, I would then review with the part/system owner to decide whether changes would be required to the CAD in order to meet the package space. Use of the JIRA system to create issues and manage the progress of them would then follow. The results of this would then progress into our functional group release meetings, where I would be representing the package team to approve the release of the parts and their subsequent orders for build. This task built knowledge of vehicle packaging and an understanding of all the systems within the vehicle to decide whether a clash was an legitimate issue or not.In addition to my main responsibility, I also assisted with CAD activities such as packaging additional parts into available spaces as well as representing the Digital Vehicle Team in design reviews. I additionally lead meetings associated with design sections and JIRA/PIRA Issue progress updates. -
Body Integration EngineerContechs Feb 2020 - Jul 2020Warwick, England, United KingdomAs a Body Integration Enginer, I was contracted to Jaguar Land Rover to work on a flagship luxury product that at the time was going through one of its prototype build phases. As the product was in a prototype phase, this meant the vehicle was subject to teething issues as new parts were being developed to enhance the vehicles performance in a new generation of luxury vehicles. My role was being at the forefront of fixing these issues, leading and encouraging the body engineering team to resolve these issues with their relevant commodities. This meant scripting instructions and providing containments, being responsible for reworking parts for the engineering group and ensuring that they were delivered to the line for production to resume and being in charge of tracking the number of issues for body engineering. I accomplished a 0 issue count when I left the business, where there was dozens of issues when I started. This was while maintaining numbers to a low level while the metrics fluctuated every day. Therefore, I felt I was a key part in ensuring that the quality of the vehicle was kept at its maximum. This included preparing the vehicles tested by senior board members, including the CEO Sir Ralf Speth. -
Graduate EngineerTata Technologies Sep 2019 - Feb 2020Leamington Spa, England, United KingdomDuring my placement year, I earned the honour of becoming a Graduate Engineer at Tata Technologies for when I finished my final year of university. With the expectation of starting as a graduate and becoming an official lead engineer after a couple of years within the business. As a Graduate Engineer, I was responsible for 5 commodities for a Jaguar Land Rover electric vehicle. These commodities were centralised around the glazings sub-component of the vehicle, including the windscreen, exterior and interior mirrors, wash system, wiper system and interior mirror cover. The objective was to make sure that these parts were delivered successfully; engineered to customer ready standards. At the start of my role, there were already known issues with these parts. This meant having to hit the ground running with little experience, ensuring I learnt the processes quickly and implemented my knowledge successfully, while communicating with the suppliers to deliver parts to specification and on time. By the time I left the company, all of these issues were completely resolved. Additionally, I orchestrated testing for these commodities to both JLR and legal standards. This was important to ensure that the parts were legally ready for sales to customers. Working with suppliers, I also took part in these tests to extend my understanding of standards and how to improve the parts I oversaw. -
Project Support EngineerTata Technologies Aug 2017 - Sep 2018Leamington Spa, England, United KingdomProject Support engineering involved being within a dynamic work environment that allowed me to experience many areas of an automotive project for Jaguar Land Rover. This project was a luxury SUV, the brand new Range Rover Evoque. From my experience in leadership during projects in university, I was placed within project management. This involved handling metrics related to all issues related to body engineering via the Automated Issue Management System (AIMS), ensuring issues were closed out and finalised to allow the product to be finished to the high quality standard that JLR is known for. An additional role included supporting launch engineering. This involved working with build engineers to ensure that the prototype builds ran as smoothly as possible, fixing issues on line to ensure that the line did not stop (costing the business astronomical amounts of money). This enhanced my understanding of the vehicle and experience within a high production environment. The most important responsibility given to me involved managing the International Material Database System (IMDS). IMDS is a legal requirement for any automotive product to be sold on the market and involved communication with lead engineers and suppliers to ensure that the relevant data sheets were submitted to the required deadlines for THOUSANDS of parts. As a student on placement, I progressed the percentage completion from 15% at the start of this task, to 98% as I left for my final year of university within the space of a few months. This role included expenses paid travel to Halewood plant in Liverpool, where I saw a production line as a first time experience and understood how it was maintained and safely operated. -
