• Designed and aligned linear and V-cavity VECSEL geometries and characterized the intracavity and output light dynamics, including checking for modelocking using an electrical spectrum analyzer.• Performed intensity and interferometric autocorrelation measurements of femtosecond pulses in the near- and mid-IR region from VECSEL and fiber laser systems.• Extracted operation parameters from semiconductor saturable absorber mirrors (SESAMs) using a self-written Python script that analyzes oscilloscope traces.• Simulated gaussian beam dynamics within a laser cavity using Python and utilized the results to construct systems to required specifications.

• Utilized Autodesk Inventor 3D CAD software to design a five-channel light field synthesizer (LFS).• Simulated the LFS apparatus and its effects on ultrafast laser pulses using a LabVIEW package and numerically characterized the temporal profile of these synthesized pulses using a transient grating frequency-resolved optical gating method.

• Investigated the use of a photomultiplier tube (PMT) array to measure multi-GeV positrons by calibrating the PMTs using a few nanosecond-long, high energy light pulses from a laser diode.• Characterized PMTs and identified defected tubes due to arcing from Helium leakage.• Performed data analysis with Python and MATLAB through parameter fitting to transient PMT oscilloscope signals, whose collection was automated using MATLAB and LabVIEW scripts.

• Responsible for the characterization and calibration of the three PMTs used in an energy calorimeter apparatus used to detect positrons created in vacuum breakdown.• Utilized a TiSapphire laser to generate signals on the PMTs, then fit curves to the resulting oscilloscope traces using Python to extract rise times and saturation behavior.• Drafted and simulated LED-pulsing circuits used to calibrate the PMTs using LTspice, prototyped and soldered the circuits, and programmed an Arduino microcontroller to control the timing and pattern of individual nanosecond light pulses.• Arrived at a replicable and portable circuit that uses a high-speed BNC cable as energy storage and employs an NPN transistor in avalanche mode to generate a short current spike and resulting near-UV LED pulse. The circuit operates in the 10-GHz frequency domain and has a rise time of less than a nanosecond, a challenging task for an electronic circuit, and costs a fraction of the price of circuits being sold online that boast the same figures. This circuit went on to be used for in-situ functionality tests of the E-320 calorimeter PMT setup.• Research was NSF sponsored and part of an international collaboration.
