Conducted a research project by measuring the cortical brain activity of women at two distinct points in their menstrual cycle via EEG to understand differences in visual processing. Extracted data using Dynamic Electrode-To-Image mapping procedures to analyze changes in spatial frequencies used to visual process male faces. Determined that women at the most fertile point of the menstrual cycle tend to use higher spatial frequency information to visually process male faces.

Led outings for rock climbing, ice climbing, mountain biking, kayaking, canoeing, navigation, winter backpacking, and snowshoeing by collaborating with co leaders, preparing trip food, gear, and itinerary, teaching technical skills, and fostering group bonding. Utilized Matlab to reconstruct the brain’s visual representations with an existing sparse-coding neural network that learns image structure to mimic the coding principles of the visual brain. Incorporated EEG data into the neural network in order to produce a more biologically driven approach for determining which filters are most important in visual processing with the goal of altering the network to reconstruct images based on a participant’s neural response to an image.

Constructed an experiment to study the effects of a light:dark cycle and lack of VIP on circadian locomotor activity of mice and the changes occurring in the SCN. Analyzed preliminary actigraphy data after conducting the experiment and presented results to a mentor and peers.

Taught basic top roping skills, including belaying and tying knots, to anyone who was eager to develop climbing skills. Greeted returning customers and welcomed new climbers daily by providing quick and organized check in and orientation, conducted safety checks on set routes, cleaned public spaces hourly, and sold gear from the shop.

Assembled a low-cost EEG and devised a small-scale experiment for testing, then analyzed the data comparing a sophisticated EEG and the low-cost EEG to establish an economical alternative EEG that can produce high-quality results. Constructed frequency domain plots for analysis of EEG output data in Matlab to test the hypothesis that the low-cost EEG would be comparable to a more sophisticated EEG.

Constructed an experiment analyzing the relationship between learning and avoiding predation comparing evolved and control drosophila to determine if evolutionary learning enhanced survival rates of drosophila. Synthesized experiment info into an 18 page research paper and presented findings to other students and faculty to facilitate the propagation of scientific findings.
