  • Network For Excellence In Washington Schools
    Government Relations/Community Engagement
Network For Excellence In Washington Schools Jun 2007 - Jan 2019
    Http://Waschoolexcellence.Org/
The Network for Excellence in Washington Schools (NEWS) is a statewide coalition of over 430 community groups, school districts and education associations fighting for full and ample funding of K-12 education as required by Article IX of our state Constitution. Our members represent students, parents, teachers, administrators and other citizens who are united in advocacy for public school funding. The case is known as McCleary vs State of Washington. NEWS prevailed in the trial court and the Supreme Court appeal. The Supreme Court Justices retained jurisdiction over the case which is unprecedented to hold the legislature's feet to the fire for keeping their own promise to have their new funding plan in full compliance by 2018.Last year, 2014, the Supreme Court found the state legislature in Contempt of Court for not following the court orders the past 6 years. In August 2015 the court issued a sanction order, unprecedented in our state. The order demands a penalty of $100K a day until the state adopts a plan to implement the funding promises they assured the court, and the one million children in our public schools. My role is the official representative for the NEWS organization providing a professional and informed public image around the state. • Serve as a liaison between NEWS and organizations representing education constituencies.• Represent NEWS at all legislative meetings on the issue of K12 education and funding. • Cultivate positive relationships with education organizations through consistent, two way communication.• Partner with education organizations to improve public awareness of education funding issues. As a member of the legal strategy team my viewpoint is the pulse of the legislature at any given time and helping the community understand the latest legal actions - what it all means in the big picture and on the ground. Confidentiality, discretion, approachability, and professionalism are key to this work.
