I was part of the internal startup that built SIMATIC AX, a next-generation engineering system for industrial automation. Think IDE for factories. It is differentiated by embracing tools and best practices from the world of software development, such as Git and CI/CD.🦭 Designed and built a package manager. Based on the NPM package format for maximum interop, but faster thanks to deduplicated package installs, easier to use with features such as project templates and interactive updates, and better security through package signatures.🦭 Massively improved the code editing experience by migrating from Theia to a solution based on VS Code. Also implemented a mechanism for delivering private extensions, allowing other teams to release their features independently.🦭 Made key contributions to the web frontend. Laid the architectural foundation (Next.js), designed and built a system to aggregate and display documentation from individual packages, and revamped the visual design with a modern aesthetic.🦭 Improved the internal development experience with Gitlab CI scripts that simplified common tasks such as deployments and enforced best practices such as package audits for security.
