Industrial Maintenance Electrician

After working with Jacobs I was offered a career with Chemco to continue doing maintenance at the Shell Scotford facility. In this time I continued working in chemicals performing daily maintenance tasks such as performing preventative maintenance on motors, heat tracing systems, MOVs, switchgear, and UPS systems. In the beginning of 2019 I received an offer to transition to the refinery and continue my journey. In the refinery I was able to expand my knowledge of high voltage switching and continue performing day to day maintenance tasks. I was able to give input to new and practices, procedures, and preventative maintenance systems. In this time I have also continually proved that I can be an important asset to the team, getting work done promptly and safely, working overtime and offshift coverage to fill the teams needs. I have also been a willing contributor to many shutdown and turnaround events working both days and nights as needed. I routinely use programs such as Microsoft Office, GSAP, AIMS, OneNote, Teams, and MS Dynamics to complete my daily tasks, with a laptop and with a work provided iPad.

May 2017 - Dec 2021

Industrial Maintenance Electrician

Jacobs Industrial Ltd

Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada

Following my completion of 2nd and 3rd year schooling I came back to Shell Scotford with Jacobs industrial Ltd. In my time with Jacobs I worked in multiple divisions including Major Maintenance, Routine Maintenance, Winterization, and Turnaround. Shortly after starting with Jacobs I completed my fourth year of schooling and got my Electrical Journeyman Certificate and Red Seal Endorsement. During my time with Major Maintenance I completed jobs ranging from temporary power and lighting inside tanks to large heat tracing overhauls and controller installation. In Routine Maintenance I learned the ins and outs of maintaining switchgear, MOVs, UPS systems, motors, VFDs, and heat tracing. Working alongside operations, my trade, as well as other trades in a team atmosphere. During winterization I became an adept heat trace splicer and troubleshooter, working on almost every type of heat trace controller system available today. During turnarounds I was happy to mentor the people that were new to site acquainting them to Shell Safe Work Practices, Procedures and proper way of doing things. Using my knowledge of the plant I was able to intervene on unsafe acts and ensure the people around me were able to achieve Goal Zero.

Mar 2015 - May 2017

Apprentice Electrician

Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada

My initial introduction to the Electrical Trade was in 2012 as a RAP student at Shell Scotford, prior to my work on site I spent 4 weeks of orientation and SWP training to ensure I was ready to safely enter the workforce. I started in the North Refinery and completed simple maintenance tasks accompanied by my Shell journeyman and I learned what it meant to be part of the maintenance team. I was even able to work with the instrumentation technicians from time to time to expand my knowledge of how things in the plant operated. After completing my first term as a RAP student I returned to high school to complete my Grade 12 Diploma. After graduating I started working for AltaFab, a company that builds wellsite trailers, this allowed me to expand my knowledge of another side of the electrical field, wiring residential living quarters. I then completed my first year of schooling at NAIT, and shortly after I was invited to come back to Shell as a second term RAP student. In this term I continued to advance my electrical knowledge and skill set working with hand and power tools. After my second RAP term was expired the Shell electricians and tech support department I worked alongside lobbied management to extend my term. My term was approved to be extended until I went to school again.
