    I regularly conduct microbiological and chemical testing of food, dairy, and water samples. My expertise lies primarily in the field of microbiology and job duties include cultivation and identification of common foodborne pathogens, identification and enumeration of coliforms in water, and bacteriological and chemical (e.g., antibiotic residue presence) testing of milk products. Other responsibilities include whole genome sequencing of food isolates, culturing Legionella species from water sources, and the development and updating of standard operating procedures as needed. Careful attention to detail and strict adherence to the basic principles of aseptic technique play critical roles in my success as a microbiologist and public health official. In addition to my role as a laboratorian, I also conduct on-site audits of dairy processing laboratories in the state of Kentucky as a Laboratory Evaluation Officer (LEO).

    My postdoctoral research objective was to elucidate some of the details of the interaction between Porphyromonas gingivalis and particular members of the indigenous microbiota residing in the oral cavity. In particular, the P. gingivalis fimbrial protein, Mfa1, was analyzed in the context of binding to a conserved domain of the SspB protein synthesized by the early colonizer, Streptococcus gordonii. This cell-to-cell binding is important for the establishment of P. gingivalis in the dental plaque biofilm, which subsequently contributes to the development of periodontitis.

    I performed research the etiologic agent of Lyme disease, Borrelia burgdorferi. My work primarily focused on the DNA-binding characteristics of BpaB proteins which have a role in the transcriptional repression of the genes that encode the mammalian infection-associated, surface-localized Erp lipoproteins.
