The second is that automation applied to an inefficient operation will magnify the inefficiency." - Bill GatesThroughout my life I have followed this principle by working to improve upon any tasks I regularly do and cut down the time spent. Some people, especially my parents, may interpret this as laziness however I believe that in life and particularly in engineering efficiency is important. If you can reduce the time a task takes to complete by 10% with an initially larger time investment it will pay off quickly if the task is done often.I have seen the benefits of this in many aspects of life from improving the way I performed chores around the house to how I prepared burritos at a Mexican restaurant. Having used and learned about computers since I was in my younger teenage years I have learned about the beauty of scripting which allows you to automate any kind of monotonous task. In my work as a software developer co-op at EMC I have had to run many tests daily and having this desire for efficiency ingrained in my head has allowed me to improve my productivity greatly. I created a script for my team that will check every system we have both hardware and virtual machine and find the status and other information of the systems. This allows us to spot problems before we run our tests so we do not have to waste time attempting to solve the wrong problem.Not everything has to be a big simplification either. I've found that creating symbolic links in linux has allowed me to modify a single link instead of twenty for tests that use the same changing parameters.
