TBIJ is the UK’s largest independent investigative journalism organisation. My role as community organiser exists to help ensure the people we write about, and with, are at the heart of the reporting. I am focused on developing new and impactful ways of involving affected, often marginalised, communities (in the broadest sense of the word) in journalism.TBIJ investigations expose systemic wrongs, challenge misinformation and spark change.I am in the Bureau Local team and working across the Bureau teams on various projects. The role has an initial focus on the Trans+ Voices project.

I offer a range of support for charitable or campaigning organisations including consultancy and training in media, communications and campaigning. I am a freelance associate at SMK (Sheila McKechnie Foundation) where I deliver regular trainings to charities and campaigners, including introductory modules on social change, campaign strategy and messaging. I regularly deliver trainings and workshops for NEON (New Economy Organisers Network) including their broadcast media training, upskilling for press officers, and I have also coordinated NEON sessions on how campaigners can effectively work with people with lived experience of the issues they campaign on.I have also delivered trainings for Media Trust, where I am on the advisory panel for the Stronger Voices training programme for equalities charities. I also offer bespoke sessions for individual organisations or campaign groups. My day rate works on a sliding scale, depending on the income of the organisation. I am also happy to advise grassroots campaign groups whose values align with mine but who have little to no income for free, when I have capacity.

I led on all communications and media at INQUEST and supported strategic policy and campaigns. The small charity has long punched above its weight in terms of visibility and impact. I was proud to build on these successes and improve the quality and reach of both the proactive and reactive media, securing regular coverage in national print and broadcast media. I worked to publicise both INQUEST’s broad policy and campaign messaging, and to support bereaved families and their legal teams throughout various cases, in a high pressure and fast paced environment. I was also managing editor of the quarterly legal journal, working with members of the INQUEST Lawyers Group, and maintained and developed the website, newsletter, social media and other communications. In the final year I managed a project on Scotland, exploring potential development opportunities and building new national networks. I also created a paid internship opportunity, and line managed the policy and communications officer and volunteers.See examples of my work there in the links below.

As policy officer I led on the monitoring of political and policy developments, coordinated and drafted consultation responses and worked on briefings for public appearances, such as parliamentary committee evidence sessions. Also supporting the coordination of the UK NPM, I organised national meetings for the 21-member human rights body, led on our external communications strategy, drafting our annual report, and working on thematic projects such as on children in detention and detention data mapping (see linked documents). This was a dual role, requiring balancing priorities, working to tight deadlines, whilst maintaining a good view of the active political and policy environment. I also developed training for staff on LGBTQ+ language and issues and contributed to a policy change on the inspection of the experiences of trans people in prison.

A quarterly not-for-profit print magazine and activist collective, I worked as part of a small co-operative team. My roles included editing and commissioning content from a network of organisers, artists, academics, and writers, as well as maintaining social media presence for 20,000+ followers. The unpaid work required use of initiative, and strong interpersonal skills to build and maintain networks, and support the voluntary team to work effectively. It also required fast learning to complete the range of tasks in a small startup environment. See the two linked issues below, where I was lead editor.
