Senior ConsultantNnfcc Jan 2019 - PresentYork, United KingdomMy main areas of expertise are industrial biotechnology, anaerobic digestion and LCA.I research technical, regulatory, sustainability and market hurdles to help technology developers, investors and policy makers de-risk their bioeconomy ventures. Examples of work on anaerobic digestion and biomethane: - updating NNFCC's Biogas and Biomethane Carbon Calculator to comply with RED II, RTFO and GGSS,- supporting anaerobic digestion (AD) plants with accreditation, reporting and sustainability compliance (e.g. OFGEM applications, and quarterly/annual submissions),- providing evidence to policy makers on the potential of AD and biomethane. Examples of work on biotechnology and biobased products:- carrying out lifecycle analyses (LCA) of biotech and/or biomass-utilising processes,- determining food safety and food labelling issues for food ingredients made from GM microorganisms,- assessing biomass availability and sustainability issues, - identifying European markets for a biobased elastomer,- comparing GHG from the production of sugar crops and cereals, as well as the GHG emissions allocated to their lignocellulosic residues,- teaching a masterclass on business plans in the bioeconomy.I am also currently working on the BBI project WASTE2FUNC, where NNFCC is looking at business cases for microbial biosurfactants from waste and lactic acid from waste. https://www.linkedin.com/company/waste2func-project/ -
Bioeconomy ConsultantNnfcc Jan 2017 - Dec 2018York, United KingdomI mainly worked on 2 European projects: - BioBase4SME (http://www.nweurope.eu/BioBase4SME), which provided a range of services to SMEs in the bioeconomy. These services aimed to provide SMEs with supporting technical, regulatory and financial information that helps them secure the confidence of investors, collaborators and customers.- DAFIA (http://www.dafia-project.eu), which researched the production of flame retardant polyamide from fish-processing residues and municipal solid waste. -
External Teacher Of Scientific EnglishUniversity Of Applied Sciences Wiener Neustadt Sep 2015 - Dec 2016Tulln, AustriaI had a part-time role teaching scientific English to bachelor's and master's degree students of biotechnology. I enjoyed coming up with language exercises using biotechnology papers and popular science articles. -
Research ScientistAcib Gmbh Jun 2015 - Dec 2016Tulln, AustriaI worked in a small team researching (C1) gas fermentation with anaerobic microorganisms in the Clostridia family. My research was on immobilising these bacteria and optimising the design of the bioreactor we were using to improve the gas mass-transfer coefficient (kLa). In this role I also organised the Clostridia workshop on gas fermentation and ABE production in Vienna in November 2016.In a second parallel project with an industry partner, I investigated the effect of enzymatic pretreatment on biogas production from wheat and maize straw. In a third parallel project, I investigated the biogas and bioethanol yield from the flowering plant Virginia Mallow (Sida hermaphrodita). -
Phd StudentUniversity Of Natural Resources And Life Sciences, Vienna (Boku) Jan 2011 - May 2015Tulln, AustriaI researched pre-treatment of different types of lignocellulosic feedstock for making biogas and for use in biorefineries. I also researched how enzyme additives for biogas plants affect the viscosity of fibrous anaerobic digestion (AD) sludge. As part of this work, I optimised the production of low-cost cellulase and xylanase enzymes from fungi using solid-state fermentation on lignocellulose-rich residues. In parallel, I researched the production of biogas and bioethanol from the perennial flowering plant, Silphium perfoliatum, in particular, how different modes of cultivation and harvest affected the gas yields. -
Fermentation ScientistIngenza Ltd Sep 2007 - May 2008Carried out fermentation of E. coli to make enzymes for the production of fine chemicals. Also carried out molecular biology with the fermentation strains.
