With millions of people on Canadian roads every day, road safety is a big priority at Transport Canada. Cars, trucks, child car seats and other products undergo extensive crash testing at the Motor Vehicle Test Centre in Blainville, Quebec, to make sure they meet safety standards, and provide invaluable insights to the regulatory development team. Lucy is a Regulatory Development Engineer under the Crashworthiness Team, responsible for the Child Occupant Protection and School Bus files. As part of her primary responsibilities, Lucy provides guidance and recommendations for regulation changes that keep travellers within this scope safe. Canada's Biomanufacturing and Life Sciences Strategy has an aim to rebuild Canada's domestic biomanufacturing sector. The Public Health Agency of Canada is a key player in this initiative, and is assessing current and ongoing needs in the biomanufacturing sector to complement recent government investments. Lucy supports the Bio-manufacturing & Pandemic Vaccine and Immunization Policy (BPVIP) Division with project management on a diverse set of portfolios and initiatives. Her responsibilities include, but are not limited to, developing project workplans for negotiating teams, organizing project updates into chronological timelines for visualization and quick reference to related documents, managing translation requests, developing divisional standard operating procedures, creating multiple-criteria decision analysis tables to formulate recommendations to management, and updating/improving various organizational tools for the unit.

After moving her family from Northern BC back to Ottawa during the pandemic, Lucy accepted various teaching contracts with Ottawa Catholic School Board, teaching grades 11 & 12 math and physics at St. Joseph High School.

Fort St. John

As part of the engineering team, Lucy designed, installed and assessed cathodic protection systems in British Columbia and Alberta. Such systems include rectifiers, groundbeds, thermoelectric generators, magnesium and zinc anode beds, vessel anodes and test posts. Lucy specialized in analyzing field survey data to pinpoint deficiencies and provide recommendations for oil and gas pipeline companies, ensuring that their licensed pipelines receive adequate cathodic protection. She also played a key role in testing a new data acquisition system which streamlined and automated real time and location dependent data from surveyors and displayed it on an interactive map for clients, allowing them to make informed decisions to protect their assets optimally.

Lucy created work packages for various gas plant turn-arounds and general maintenance projects in support of Facility Engineers in the North Peace Region of BC. Reports included in-field assessments, defining design specifications, isometric drawings, piping and instrumentation diagram (P&ID) redlines, welding requirements, non-destructive examination practices, pressure testing calculations, valve and seal selection, coating requirements, safety considerations and as-building services.In addition, Lucy also assisted in emissions calculations for annual Greenhouse Gas Emissions reports, and supported lead mechanical engineers in acquiring the necessary scope, cost projection, risk data and documentation for the following year’s regional maintenance projects. Lucy managed a portfolio of projects, maintaining weekly cost spreadsheets, projecting costs for ongoing projects, and logging ‘lessons learned’ for each to ensure continuous improvement for project management. She fostered an excellent rapport with clients and field operators, and was the point of contact for the projects that she managed.

Lucy obtained a contract position with an intercity school in Sheffield, UK where she was sought out to teach intermediate/senior level high school French and Spanish. She practiced differentiated learning techniques to keep students engaged and ensure that she was teaching to their strengths. The school had a very high rate of special needs students, and she made it a point to ensure that their learning, social and emotional needs were listened to and considered in my teaching practices. Classroom management was key to optimal learning and she created functional seating plans and class rules which helped both herself and her students to excel at concentrating, working together and learning in her classroom. An example of an assignment was learning the vocabulary for locations and items one would find in a home, then asking students to draw their dream home and write a paragraph explaining what their dream house would look like. Beyond cultivating strong bonds with her students, Lucy established enduring connections with her colleagues and mentors.

Lucy was a teacher at Bert Bowes Middle School, where she taught French Immersion, Math and Sciences. Where possible, she used hands on learning approaches by including labs for science classes, incorporating ‘math walks’ to investigate concepts such as pi, and using cooperative group learning such as using skits, music and visual hand gestures to practice second languages. She integrated technology by involving smartboard activities, virtual physics lab apps and French Game apps to match sounds and/or pictures for vocabulary expansion. Assessment strategies for learning, as learning and of learning optimized student performance in her classroom through partner/class game quizzes, peer and self-assessments, and summative assignments/tests.

While working in ISR’s Product Division, Lucy assisted in developing, testing and releasing a suite of software and hardware designed to both train clients how to detect and respond to radiological events, as well as manage and view data acquired from real radiological events. Such events included, but were not limited to terrorism exercises for Olympic venues, accidents involving the transport of isotopes, nuclear powered submarines/air-craft carriers and nuclear power plants. Lucy played a primary role in product and business development in the division, representing the company at conferences and overseeing the management of the hardware/software systems for several large scale multi-organizational exercises in Canada and abroad. She was the point of contact for various high level clients, from the Canadian Department of National Defence, several national and international nuclear power plants, as well as various national and international government, first responder, emergency response and military organizations. Lucy was responsible for writing product manuals, developing training seminars and was the primary field trainer and product technician. She maintained excellent rapport with clients to confirm their systems were running well, to acquire feedback on ways to improve the user interface, and to ensure all new staff was appropriately trained. Lucy also harnessed the foundations of her project management experience through these experiences, maintaining a detailed spreadsheet of component pricing, purchasing, costs of manufacture and shipping, as well as keeping a detailed log of hours spent on the various stages of large scale projects.
