Goals of the project included developing commercially-viable synthesis for nature-identical xanthophylls, specifically by developing streamline enzymatic synthesis of enantiomerically pure (+)- and (-)-ipsdienol. My contributions to the project entailed optimizing conditions for large-scale heterologous (bacterial) production of Ipsdienol dehydrogenase (IDOLDH) and Thermostable Alcohol Dehydrogenase (TADH). Optimization of production methods included rapidly learning and applying numerous molecular biology, biochemistry and chromatography techniques.

My contributions to this project entailed learning, applying and teaching techniques in molecular biology, plant/bacterial biochemistry and analytical chemistry (HPLC, GPC/SEC). Plant biochemistry and analytical techniques were additionally applied for natural rubber extraction and chemical analysis for external companies (e.g. Kultevat, LLC).
