Project Engineer (Business)
In April of 2018, I was given extra responsibilities alongside my current role of a field support engineer. As a project engineer, I typically will get a scope of works which the end user (one of our clients who we provide a managed internet service to) will want to make a change to their connection. I will put together a cost for the works, carry out checks to make sure what they would like is possible, put together a plan of works for secondline/engineer and carry out the works on site. The common works which I get are: VoIP changes, speed upgrades, new client setup, changes to IP configuration and port patching, however, we do sometimes get requests which aren't standard and require careful planning with other departments and the client.
Field Engineer
Providing network infrastructure support for student and residential multi-tenanted buildings across the UK. Also includes core network and data centre maintenance as well as provisioning new customers at business our business parks.Daily work consisted of wireless testing with InSSIDer and Ekahau software to identify potential coverage and co-channel interference issues, replacing wireless access points, replacing routers/switches/gateways, investigating wired infrastructure issues, kickstarting new site gateways and various installations and maintenance work in our datacentre.
Secondline Support (Secondment)
I worked alongside our established secondline support team during the move in period of 2017. Although it was very busy, this allowed me to learn a lot in a short space of time. Work included assisting our engineers by configuring kit that they had installed (such as switches, routers and gateways), assisting third party engineers who would install building infrastructure kit (such as door access panels and laundry view devices), as well as supporting our firstline support team with end user problems ranging from slow speeds to sign-up issues.
First Line Support
First line remote support for multi tenant student accommodations, business customers and residential customers across the UK.
Technical Support
At Knowhow I supported customers who were within their manufacturers warranty and extended warranty doing remote hardware and software technical support. The scope of support we told to provide was quite limited due to time constraints on calls (our time limit for each call was around 5 minutes) but I gained a wealth of customer service skills as the vast majority of calls were from dissatisfied customers and I have carried these skills with me into all other roles so far.
Trainee It Technician
Blue Box IT was a work placement from Pearson in Practice. I supported experienced field technicians, attending 2 schools per day as well as a retail park in Gainsborough. The sizes of the schools varied and so did the faults which arose. Each sites server was backed up to tape so we made sure that this was done overnight when we visited so that in the event of a major failure we could restore service as soon as possible. I also carried out server building back at the office and took note of how things such as DNS, DHCP, Active Directory were set up for each new sites individual needs. In terms of support, I came across files being deleted from teachers machines quite often which they were often very worried about but I reassured them not to worry as it was all backed up on the site server and could easily be restored. We also provided support for the interactive whiteboards/projectors, checking software compatibility for the teachers and students, salvaging hardware from old machines etc. When everything was working fine, we carried out general housekeeping to make sure that everything was working how it should be and making sure that any potential faults in the future were nipped in the bud.
Trainee It Technician
This was an intensive apprenticeship in which we learnt the CompTIA A+, MTA Windows 7 and MTA Networking. We also learnt valuable skills for employment, such as how to present yourself to potential employers/clients and how to approach problems. Our tutor was great as he never handed the answer to us on a plate, if we didn't understand something he made sure that we did by the time he was done! Although this was quite stressful at the time, I am very glad that we were taught that way as he didn't only prepare us to pass the exam, he prepared us for one we went out into the industry as well.
