The Space Diplomacy Lab is the product of the Duke University's Center for International and Global Studies and Rethinking Diplomacy Program. Its core objective is to provide a forum to convene a diverse, multidisciplinary set of academics, students, diplomatic practitioners, and commercial spaceflight leaders from the fields of space science and technology, national security, and international diplomacy to develop cross-cutting research, policy proposals and solutions to mitigate risks and ensure the promise of a secure and sustainable future of humanity in space.

The Sustainability Leadership Fellowship is a competitive training program for early career scientists. The central learning objectives are for participants to effectively communicate science to the media and public, to build professional development skills and techniques (i.e. conflict management, interacting with policy-makers, data visualization, and time and workload optimization), and to learn strategies for building meaningful careers that incorporate cross-disciplinary engagement and integrative thinking.

- Researched in the Vazquez-Prokopec Laboratory. - Designed and led a research project investigating the role of household, consumer-based aerosolized insecticides as a selection factor for pyrethroid resistance among Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.- Managed a six-person survey team and conducted 150 household surveys in three towns outside of Mérida.- Adapted and designed research protocols to test the biological efficacy and residual effect of two aerosol products against susceptible and resistant Aedes aegypti females.- Awarded a $1,900 Global Field Experience Grant from the Rollins School of Public Health to cover field expenses.- Presented research via poster presentations at two consecutive American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH) conferences.

- Partnered with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and conducted a systematic review assessing the effectiveness of child feces disposal interventions on soil-transmitted helminth infection and diarrhea prevention. Co-managed literature reviews and determined abstract and full text eligibility.- Conducted literature reviews and determined abstract and full text eligibility for scientific articles addressing the impact of water, sanitation, and hygiene interventions on health outcomes, including trachoma, diarrheal disease, and soil-transmitted helminth infections, for inclusion in a future sanitation guideline issued by the World Health Organization.- Collaborated with data entry for a project affiliated with CARE, the Ministry of Education of Kenya, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Measured hand washing frequency and latrine usage determined via reinvented toilet technology in 20 elementary schools in Nairobi, Kenya. - Managed all data entry for a UNICEF-partnered project measuring the impact of water, sanitation, and hygiene interventions on school absenteeism among 52 elementary schools in Laos.

- Served as a research manager for Lazos de Agua, a project sponsored by Millennium Water Alliance and the Coca-Cola Latin America FEMSA Foundation and executed by Emory University's Rollins School of Public Health and Water for People Honduras.- Supervised in-field qualitative data collection in San Antonio de Cortés, Honduras that mapped relevant domains of social capital in the Honduran context, positively and negatively correlated social capital with water system functionality, and affiliated governance practices with improved water system functionality. - Co-facilitated professional training for survey enumerators focusing on the following topics: bioethics in human-based qualitative research, research methodologies, and the principles of social capital. - Managed research team logistics such as transportation costs, travel plans, and data collection materials.- Co-authored the preliminary report for all procedures conducted and data collected in Honduras.

- Researched in the Lenhart Laboratory in the Center for Global Health, Division of Parasitic Diseases and Malaria, Entomology Branch.- Determined the presence of insecticide resistance among Aedes aegypti samples collected from a household insecticide study and an indoor residual spraying trial in Mexico. Resistance was determined through the presence of Ile1016 or Cys1534 knockdown mutations as shown by RT-PCR.- Worked as a lab technician in the mosquito insectary, rearing both susceptible and pyrethroid-resistant Aedes aegypti and Anopholes albimanus colonies to use for insecticide resistance screening assays. - Conducted additional enzyme activity assays, DNA extractions, and RT-PCRs on samples as needed.

Aurahuá, Huancavelica, Peru

- Trained a group of 30 health promoters in prevention and treatment of diarrheal diseases and parasites, signs of anemia and malnutrition among children, hand washing promotion, safe water consumption, the use of animal corrals and latrines, healthy nutrition for pregnant women and children under three-years-old, and early childhood stimulation techniques.-Organized and taught “Steps Forward,” a sexual health and social skills curriculum, to 30 high school students. Facilitated topics related to self-esteem, leadership, gender issues, sexuality, drugs and alcohol, teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, and HIV/AIDS. - Organized and led a weekly leadership class for 12 high school students in first grade; students were taught assertive communication, self-esteem building, and healthy decision-making skills.- Designed and executed a training program called “Books and Leaders” for the 12 high school graduates of her first grade leadership program in order to educate students how to be reading tutors for their younger peers. - Facilitated basic summer school science education for 15 students in order to increase children’s interest in science and perspective concerning the natural world.- Facilitated two summer school literature classes, one for children 6-8 years of age and another for children 9-12 years of age. - Built and opened Aurahuá's first public library after being awarded a $1,600 Small Project Assistance grant from USAID. - Established a recycling program in the local elementary school, which taught students the importance of environmental health while also providing an income source for the school.- Constructed two landfills for the local health clinic for biological waste and trained medical staff on proper biological waste management.- Launched a weekly, health-themed radio program to educate townspeople on childcare, parasite prevention, and other healthy practices.
