Bioengineering Ambassador And Engineering Faculty Champion
As a bioengineering student at the University of Sheffield, my role as an ambassador was to attend all open days or public talks and answer questions from prospective students about the engineering programme and life generally as a student in Sheffield. Oversaw and supported an interdisciplinary engineering team of 18 in developing new synthetic biology technologies, compiling research and creating presentations to showcase at annual iGEM Grand Jamboree in Paris.iGEM Sheffield's 2022 project, rEvolver, was awarded a gold medal in the Foundational Advance category for our work on a directed evolution plasmid system. This system can perform in vivo, continuous directed evolution of a particular gene of interest. Additionally, the team developed a one-of-a-kind toroidal turbidostat bioreactor capable of culturing prokaryotes. This bioreactor was nominated for the Best Hardware standalone award at the iGEM 2022 Grand Jamboree.iGEM 2023 saw Sheffield succeed once again, with us taking home silver in the Foundational Advance category for our work on characterising phage-derived growth-slowing genes, and then adapting them to be in vivo inducible growth-rate controllers. To complement this work, we developed a multiplexed bioreactor purpose-built for growth characterisation under dynamic conditions. Our work on this bioreactor resulted in us being nominated for the Best Model standalone prize!
