Engaged to project manage the build of a prototype robot for an ongoing funded R&D project. Specifically, to oversee the final design changes, organise subcontract work, order parts and prepare build team to meet a tight project deadline. In addition, Synovate and their parent company Synthotech tasked me with compiling observations, opportunities and recommendations related to, improving R&D execution, areas of R&D to explore and to relate them to the overall business strategy.• Robot build was back on schedule enabling funded project to continue.• Identified a new product that could be implemented quickly adding customer value and generate income.• Highlighted a number of avenues to explore in terms of research, product development and operational improvements.

Assisted the Omani government define the viability of establishing a clay industry to inform a multimillion-pound investment decision. During this project I was successfully carried out the following activities:• Provided a market assessment and defined the requirements of markets such as pottery, building materials, cosmetics, pet care and vegetable oil.• Identified new applications for the waste of each process, increasing profitability and establishing an ecosystem.• Prepared comprehensive business canvases detailing, investment, costs, revenues, key relationships and resources.• Secured the Investment of £150m to create 6-8 businesses with predicted economic benefit of around £500m per annum.

Working as part of the transport team for a management consultancy seeking to apply ingenuity to the use of technology, I was responsible for:• Roll out of a successful mobile phone app for use by those in leadership and management roles of a national infrastructure provider. The app provided instant access to key details and prompts for a wide range of complex issues related to their duties such as legal, human resource information and guidance for personal development.• Assessed the whole systems modelling approach of a national infrastructure provider in order to ensure awareness of interdependencies between projects. This enabled management to predict the consequences of decisions to cancel, rescope, reduce budget or postpone work across a portfolio of projects.• Secured a lucrative two-year contract providing consultancy services to another national infrastructure provider.

SCT design and adapt sensors for Industrial Internet of Things applications. They created the Smart Washer a clamp force sensor to measure the tightness of a bolted joint. Enabling clients to remotely monitor the condition of their assets and benefit from condition-based maintenance. The following was achieved during my time managing the business:• Restructured the organisation to completely overhaul its technology in a short timeframe; From TRL 4 (Dec 2016) to TRL 7 (May 2018). • Increased the number of staff and the core competencies possessed by the team, from 3 to 7 people.• Deployed the Smart Washer onto live track of the UK rail network, via a £600k First of a Kind Innovate UK project, demonstrating its value over a 12-month deployment to the target client Network Rail. • Won £1.5 million in UK and European R&D funding from three successful proposals.• Expanded sensor range by starting R&D work to create a new void detection sensor, code named Smart X.

Make Things Better is an innovation consultancy I founded with the goal to transform organisations and their performance through the effective application of strategy, innovation & technology. We were able to specifically solve complex problems by uncovering and exploiting a combination of technical performance indicators, behavioural and organisational insights. I was able to assist key clients including:Network Rail (NR) The UKs rail network asset maintainer and operator wanted to replace existing practices for understanding and reporting issues affecting senior leaders and operations of the network. NR sought to reduce cost, improve the potency of insights and increase the speed of reporting. Key achievements included:• I developed decision support software that could be acted on in near real-time using cutting-edge semantic analysis of digital text from corporate emails, to identify the real substance of what was being communicated.• I resolved operational and political concerns to gain the required confidence and co-ordinated assistance from other departments.• I created a customised system saving £150k per year in reduced operational costs, with significant strategic benefits.The Staffordshire Alliance (SA) sought to improve their ‘tie in’ works (moving short sections of railway track). Due to severe financial penalties should the works which required weekend long shutdowns over run. Key achievements included:• I designed a new tool for a JCB Road-Railer and developed with SA’s project team and external organisations. This was estimated to be seven times faster, significantly safer and more versatile than the existing method.• I established a committed partnership with the capability and experience to manufacture the tool.• I obtained funding for the prototyping and testing from Network Rail.

The Research Council (TRC) is a government organisation specifically created to help the country of Oman diversify its economy away from its dependency on oil and gas revenues. I was senior member of the team responsible for areas of strategic importance relating to research and development, innovation and entrepreneurialism including:• Writing and executing Oman’s national innovation strategy, with external organisations such as the United Nations. I Guided policy and adapted international best practice for Omani culture and capability.• Provided guidance for the setup of a multimillion-dollar technology park and national innovation centre. • Created TRC’s programme to commercially exploit both academic R&D programmes and innovation projects. To finance projects from proof of concept to market entry and beyond. Working in partnership with funding agencies, academic and industrial organisations across Oman.• Established a $3m pilot programme to assist members of the public to realise their ideas for new ventures. Mentored chosen innovators to develop business cases. Building awareness and ensuring viability of, technical, commercial and intellectual property issues.

Pera specialised in government funded R&D projects, specifically large consortium projects to benefit the European SME sector with new high risk but high reward applications of state-of-the-art science. Key achievements include:• Managed a portfolio of projects worth £5 million with 50 participants in 13 countries in technologically diverse fields including solar technologies, polymer processing, medical implements and radar absorbing technologies.• Took over and rescued a failing project avoiding a £800k loss. • Sold the intellectual property for a solar technology to a large enterprise in the construction sector.• Defined the development direction and output for several projects, making critical engineering decisions related to technical feasibility, budget and timeframe.• Led teams of scientists and engineers to perform technical tasks, to specification, safely.

Designed and installed bespoke fall protection / prevention systems across the UK. Visited sites to determine the client requirements including taking measurements. Designed the best possible system from a range of height safety products and suppliers and generated a quote. I also project managed the installations and led the site based work.Conducted detailed principle inspections of railway structures across the UK utilising Industrial Roped Access Techniques.

Conducted detailed principle inspections and testing of buildings, bridges, chimneys and underground structures across the UK by utilising Industrial Roped Access and Confined Space Techniques. Responsible for the inspections as lead engineer / project manager, including leading a team of up to 10 people, liaising with the client, arranging sub contractors and any equipment / plant required, preparing detailed method statements and risk assessments and completing the site work. Compiled all data obtained during the inspections and compiled detailed reports. Key Skills:Leading teams of workers to achieve the objective, on time, too budget, safely.Thinking on my feet to solve unforeseen problems.Compiling detailed technical reports including data analysis and 2D AutoCAD drawings.Acquiring required competencies and certification. Ensured six parts of a jet engine were manufactured to a challenging deadline for Rolls Royce.• Implemented design changes to adapt parts for modern manufacturing methods in collaboration with Rolls Royce engineers.• Produced 2D manufacturing drawings updating dimensions, tolerances and surface finishes.• Managed subcontract machining capability, liaising to ensure design changes could be achieved within the timeframe.

I was entrusted with an urgent project during a student placement due to the loss of a development engineer. Ensured a 1Megawatt natural gas engine met Japanese emissions regulations, keeping a sales commitment. Remapped the engines air to fuel ratio, changed components to create a Japan Engine Spec & BOM. Worked on engine test beds with the test engineers collating information and performing calculations. Presented results and observations to the engine team and sales staff.I returned to Perkins just before the second gulf war as a fitter for the servicing and reconditioning of the diesel engines and gear boxes used for the ministry of defence’s tanks. Tasks included: Dismantling engines, removing gaskets, cleaning and deburring parts ready for inspection and rebuilding.
