In late 2021, Malcolm completed a 34 year career in the Australian Public Service, including the last 12 years as a Deputy Secretary in the environment, climate and agriculture departments, and as Head of Task Force for the National COVID-19 Commission. Malcolm is continuing his career in advising on strategic policy and all aspects of institutional resilience, as well as opportunities to coach and mentor senior executives in government. Drawing on his deep experience in public policy, organisational change and regulatory oversight, he enjoys bringing practical and strategic advice to help clients in government and those working with government. Malcolm has roles as an Expert Adviser with Proximity - a leading provider of integrated consulting, legal and commercial services to government and large organisations; and as a Senior Associate with Aither (a Ricardo Company) - Australia’s leading team of advisors specialising in water policy, water markets, infrastructure, and natural hazards. Malcolm also recently became a member of the Centre for Strategy and Governance - a network of independent professionals with a deep understanding of Federal, State and Territory governments and a shared interest in providing high-level strategic and governance advice.Malcolm believes that solving problems starts with active listening to understand the context and drivers of issues and to form clear insights about what action needs to be taken to address them. He has a natural coaching style and enjoys mentoring leaders. He has also built capability in facilitating conversations to draw wisdom from the room, and to foster shared understanding of challenges and opportunities to move solutions forward.
