CHEM Trust is a charity with arms in the UK and Germany which has campaigned to prevent long-term damage from chemicals to human health and the environment since 2007. It is an accredited stakeholder at the European Chemicals Agency and an active member of the UK Chemicals Stakeholder Forum. B Lab has Regional Advisory Groups whose mandate is to deepen the engagement of regional experts in improving the Standards of the challenging B Impact Assessment that companies need to pass in order to be certified as B Corp companies in recognition of the quality of their social and environmental governance. Currently, B Lab has advisory groups in Latin America, East Africa, Australia, UK and Europe which provide constructive feedback and recommendations to B Lab and the Standards Advisory Council ( SAC) on regional specific issues.

Diversity Resource International was formed 16 years ago as a non-profit organisation created to offer a simple befriending service to help newly arrived migrants to settle into the UK county of Sussex. It has informally grown to provide networking events, micro-community stakeholder groups and training courses as needs arose to equip its community members with the life skills they needed to survive and thrive. In 2020, DRI witnessed a surge in demand for its services and access to its community as the Covid-19 pandemic laid bare the existing social inequities responsible for disparities in health outcomes. Simultaneously, the international resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement is making DRI the ‘go to’ local organisation for many governmental, private and charitable bodies seeking to work with Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities. I was invited to join in 2020 to contribute experience, deliver training and to help DRI strategically plan for its future in the wake of the rapid increase in demand for its knowledge and services. As a precursor to restructuring and modernising core functions, I am leading the design of a Theory of Change model to assess the needs of today and achieving a vision that tackles social inequities and celebrates the cultural, knowledge and skill contributions possible when ethnic diversity in valued by society. http://www.driorg.com

Chemical Watch grew from two people to over 75 by the time of its sale in 2020, becoming a globally referenced intelligence service for a community of professionals championing their organisations’ vital management of product safety and regulatory compliance. Throughout this rapid growth, we maintained our sense of shared endeavour and achievement while providing career-making opportunities for many members of staff. In parallel, we fiercely protected our reputation for respectfully, accurately and objectively meeting the information needs of a very diverse range of stakeholders in this politically complex, dynamic field.While it took a traditional B2B news publishing model at its launch, Chemical Watch combined this with rapid deployment of new technology, establishing that customers were willing to pay for essential information online even back in 2007. Over the course of several strategic growth cycles the company continued to be an early adopter of new information technologies. In a non-parent governor role, I was invited to join the governing body of this large semi-urban comprehensive school leadership in order to add value with my business management skills. I supported the head through a daunting series of managerial challenges from safeguarding to changing governmental policies to the college’s relationship with the local community and parents, to disciplinary hearings and senior recruitment processes. During my tenure as Chair of the Performance Assessment Committee, the school underwent a successful Ofsted inspection, with the governing body’s knowledge of school performance being particularly commended.

As elected parent governor, I contributed widely to the management of issues arising for the governing body of this large junior school from parent relationships, safeguarding management to syllabus and teaching, to challenging on specific issues including its provision for preparing its students for a multicultural world. I supported the head through a year of unexpectedly poor academic results to lead the Teaching & Learning Assessment Committee. A number of issues were identified and resolved, and performance monitoring was improved, to minimise the risk of recurrence in the future.

My 15-year tenure on the UK’s premier environmental publication allowed me to investigate a wide range of environmental issues from world trade rules to multilateral environmental treaties to local pollution prevention initiatives. My role as Corporate Editor required me to engage and hold to account environmental managers at manufacturing companies across several sectors and their stakeholders fostering a keen sense of the good, bad and ugly of corporate practice. My specific focus was on the chemical industry which has been at the cutting edge of sustainability awareness and response. Joining as technology reporter, I went on to set up a weekly environment column which brought a broad range of stakeholder views to an industry audience. Two significant reports I authored were on the economic growth of the Indian chemical industry based on a two-week fact-finding tour and a series on the wide range of perspectives I witnessed at the Rio Earth Summit.
