About Manar Zaghlula, Ph.D.
I am a science policy professional working at the nexus of genome editing and public policy. I currently serve as the Health Policy Manager at the Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI) of UC Berkeley. As part of the IGI’s Public Impact team, I work with experts and key stakeholders to advance evidence-based recommendations for public policy and regulation that promote equitable and affordable access to transformative genetic therapies in the United States and globally.Prior to managing the team's health policy portfolio, I was a 2022 CCST Science and Technology Policy Fellow. As a Fellow, I gained practical experience applying my scientific training in a dual role as a committee consultant and legislative staffer, covering a variety of issue areas such as health, environmental, and education policy. I received my Ph.D. training at Baylor College of Medicine studying the genetics of rare neurologic disorders. Specifically, I used RNA interference and CRISPR screens to identify novel therapeutic entry points for MECP2 disorders. As a graduate student I also led a trainee-run science policy group, for which I secured grant funding for a science policy initiative to engage early-career scientists. Being at the intersection of science and public policy enables me to work towards greater impact while also combining my deep interest in biomedical science, my dedication to help rare disease patients, and my critical thinking and analytical skills to find innovative solutions.
Listed skills include Mouse Models, Tissue Culture, Grant Writing, Scientific Writing, and 8 others.
