Lead design engineer for developing a high-throughput, cellular resolution, computed tomography imaging system using the Advanced Photon Source synchrotron at Argonne National Labs.
  • Oregon State University
    Automation Engineer
Oregon State University Jul 2010 - Mar 2013
    Corvallis, Oregon
-Developing a suite of automation and analysis tools to enable high-throughput, low-cost toxicological zebrafish screening to identify compounds for pharmaceutical research and environmental monitoring.-Manage an interdisciplinary engineering group of mechanical, electrical, industrial, and computer disciplines.Video documenting our work:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJv3O85xW5Y
  • Oregon State University - Dept. Of Environmental & Molecular Toxicology
    Graduate Research Assistant
Oregon State University - Dept. Of Environmental & Molecular Toxicology Feb 2010 - Jun 2010
    Corvallis, Oregon
-Developed three major proof-of-concept systems that successfully demonstrated the automated manipulation and analysis of zebrafish for toxicological research, enabling high-throughput, low-cost toxicology screening. -Developed a demonstration system utilizing vision-guided pick-and-place which proved the ability to pick single zebrafish embryos from a petri dish and place them into multi-well plates with greater speed and less embryo damage than human laboratory technicians.-Developed an automated injection system utilizing a Denso six-axis robot and three Cognex machine vision cameras capable of fully automated micro-injection of zebrafish embryos from 6 to 28 hours post fertilization.-Built a prototype system that automated a manual process to enzymatically remove the chorion from zebrafish embryos en masse, while reducing labor time and outcome variability.-Demonstrated that an industrial machine vision system could be used for embryonic behavioral analysis at earlier embryo development phases than any existing systems.
  • Oregon State University - Dept. Of Chemistry
    Graduate Research Assistant
Oregon State University - Dept. Of Chemistry Mar 2009 - Feb 2010
    Corvallis, Oregon
-Developed hardware, electronics, and software for sixteen microfluidic research projects examining nano-scale separations and filtration, environmental monitoring, bio-threat analysis, and lab-on-a-chip Micro Total Analysis Systems (µTAS) in coordination with nine laboratory researchers. -Developed a custom thermocycler for microfluidic based PCR using stacked peltier devices that achieved extremely high temperature ramp rates and fast cycle times compared to commercially available systems.-Developed systems for slug-microfluidics, including slug generation, detection, and synchronization components with other tools and processes, such as auto-samplers, imaging systems, and reaction chambers.-Developed custom controller and LED lighting for a spiropyran heavy metal extraction system designed as a reusable filter for heavy metals.
