The Racial Equity in Addiction across the Lifespan Collaborative (REAL Lab) at the University of Missouri—St. Louis seeks to improve racial equity* in the research, treatment, and outcomes of substance use and behavioral health. The REAL Lab conducts research examining the impact of racialization on substance use and behavioral health outcomes with the goal of improving access to culturally-appropriate prevention strategies for minoritized people. We use interdisciplinary and mixed methods that integrate technology and community-engagement to improve the impact and relevance of research for people belonging to minoritized racial and ethnic groups—those who have traditionally been excluded from and overlooked in substance use and behavioral health research due to systemic racism.Our approach to understanding and preventing substance use and related behavioral health consequences (e.g., traumatic stress, sexual behavior) considers the whole lifespan. We consider strategies for improving behavioral health at all three levels of prevention:Primary: understanding and preventing substance use and its immediate health and social consequences, usually among children and adolescentsSecondary: understanding the development of substance use disorders (AKA "addictions") and preventing onset or severe courses, usually during adolescence and young adulthoodTertiary: reducing the burden of substance use disorder through treatment and harm reduction strategies to prevent social, functional, and health consequences, including overdose, typically among adultsThe REAL Lab provides a space for research collaborators, community members, students of all levels, and professional partners to participate in education and mentorship in interdisciplinary topics spanning health disparities to psychosocial development while working together toward antiracist science and a more equitable society.https://www.umsl.edu/psychology/real-lab/index.html

Regional Field Organizer May ­ November, 2010 · Oversaw the Farmington office and directed all voter contact efforts in 4 major counties in Missouri's 8th Congressional District. · Created a cohesive team of volunteers who understood and surpassed ambitious metric goals, including consistently knocking on more than 500 doors and making over 1500 phone calls per week. · Established camaraderie and loyalty within the community with key constituencies and amongst the volunteers. · Planned and executed various events including fundraisers with over 100 guests, several town halls with standing room only, and team trainings that allowed us to flawlessly execute our Get Out the Vote program.

Field Organizer July ­ May 2010 · Directed all voter contact efforts in Missouri's 2nd Congressional District and working with local political leaders, student, labor, faith, and not-profits organizations to achieve shared goals and networks. · Collected over 500 videos (highest nationally) in support of comprehensive clean energy from concerned constituents, editing the videos and them uploading them to the Repower America Wall. · Student Outreach Coordinator ­ organized and executed a plan that allowed us to extensively reach out to and involve over 3,000 students across the state of Missouri.

Field Organizer June ­ November 2008 · Directed all voter contact efforts and supervised all volunteer efforts in 14 Scott County precincts including the highest vocal in Davenport and the majority of rural Scott County. · Organized and staffed events including a town hall meeting with Barack Obama and a door to door canvass with political surrogate former Governor Tom Vilsack. · Singlehandedly ran a successful Get Out the Vote Campaign with nearly 100 walk packets that had to get walked at least three times in four days that led to record turnout. · Led phonebanks and door-to-door trainings of more than 100 people and dealing professionally and immediately with any problems that arose.Planned; · Developed a participatory online course to accompany trainings and workshops, and assisting on research projects and programs.Community Involvement
