Developed innovative strategies for supporting developing-country groups and individuals, and in training and dissemination of ‘sustainable living’ solutions both in UK and abroad. Provided consultancy and advice via ongoing dialogue, to grassroots NGOs, vernacular building experts and ‘social business’ groups, in the areas of sustainable construction, appropriate technologies, integrated farming etc.Conducted practical teaching workshops introducing agro-ecology and integrated farming concepts, sustainable building (constructing domes and other structures using innovative ‘super-adobe’ methods), and other appropriate technology topics.Developed a car-towed Mobile Training Facility (strawbale house and dome building demonstrators, compressed-earth blocks and improvised emergency shelters). Used at Scouts Centenary International Jamboree (65,000 participants), Engineers Without Borders training, etc. Also ran other demonstration building and training/awareness workshops/activities in Nigeria, RHS Hampton Court flower show, Ecodysgu and Coed Hills centres etc.

Development projects and propositions included various innovative shelter solutions for expeditionary camps, battlefield and security infrastructure, novel sandwich-panel solutions, smart, secure containers, deployable smart structures for Un-manned Air Vehicles, explosion protection in composite vehicles, ‘Heat-pipe’ cooling garments, plant-fibre-reinforced thermoplastics for making car parts, transparent composites, and Fibre-Metal Laminates.

Work included significant liaison with various government and industry partners across the EU in large collaborative programmes.

Set up production facilities, and developed optimised procedures for manufacture and mechanical and ballistic characterisation. Developed a range of novel instrumented tests which improved theoretical and practical understanding of ballistic impact in composites.
