Led comms for the joint MfE/Stats NZ environmental reporting programme. This involved maximising the storytelling potential of the reports to generate media coverage and create public campaigns. The Our atmosphere and climate 2020 report, and education and public information campaigns developed from it, won a national science communication award.I also developed comms for several high profile policies, wrote speeches, and was the media lead for the Ministry.

Responsibilities:Leading a small editorial team at New Zealand’s most popular news website.Ensuring the site is up-to-date, accurate and engaging, including commissioning or writing news stories, editing photos, vetting video, gathering user-generated content and packaging content for readers.Ensuring content is handled appropriately, awareness of legal issues.Liaising with senior editorial staff across Fairfax New Zealand, Stuff.co.nz’s parent company.Skills gained:Newsroom management and coordination. Strong digital production skills, including building multimedia content packages, expertise in writing eye-catching and search optimised headlines and editing photos.Managing user-generated content.Achievements:First person in the newsroom after the September 2010 earthquake hit Christchurch and edited the unfolding story for six hours immediately after the quake.Managed coverage and often reported directly on major local and international news events.Attended the Taking Up The Reins newsroom management course.Built strong working relationships with editorial staff from across the company, often overcoming resistance from those with a print-focused mindset.

Responsibilities:Editing copy and photos for Stuff.co.nz and Fairfax’s masthead websites.Skills gained:Improved copy editing, photo editingDeveloped efficient production method to meet tight deadlines.Achievements:Successfully developed a system for editing a number of websites within tight deadlines. The editor of Stuff.co.nz later told me that when the idea for the project was first raised, he didn’t think it would be possible.

Responsibilities:Writing news, sports and features for a six day-a-week regional newspaper. Work included education, transport, health and football rounds, as well as breaking news, court and regular music features for the entertainment pages.Skills gained:Developed good reporting skills across a range of subject areas.Developed good news and feature writing techniques.Appreciation for how society works and its diversity.Appreciation for working within a traditional newspaper newsroom.Achievements:Covering the case of Debbie Ashton, a young woman killed by a driver on the witness protection programme who would have been in jail when the crash occurred if he hadn’t hid his identity from the court. I covered the case from when police were hunting for the driver, who was on the run from the police following the crash, through to the release of a ministerial report on systemic failings that allowed him to hide his identity.Exposing the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board’s bullying of a woman that it had mistakenly sent confidential patient details to.Writing a story about changes in Nelson’s school demographics and how this was shaped by changes in the community, using what is now called “data journalism”.Adding colour and flair to the newspaper with my entertainment features.

Shot and oversaw the editing of the first in-house news video pubished on Stuff.co.nz – a press conference with Sir Peter Jackson and the stars of King Kong, ahead of the world premiere in Wellington.
