About Maria Carter

Maria Carter is a Experienced public radio leader │ I help grow and diversify digital and broadcast audiences. at City Cast. She possess expertise in leadership, producing, adobe audition, social media, public speaking and 45 more skills. She is proficient in Swedish and Russian. Colleagues describe her as "Maria Carter is one of the most delightful people I've worked with in my decade-plus tour in public radio. She's incredibly creative and hard-working, but she has a unique talent for seeing a reporter's innate strengths and helping that person find stories and projects where those talents shine. She makes everyone around her brighter, sharper and more innovative, while fostering a strong sense of teamwork. Maria helped me dream big and accomplish hard things. I was extremely fortunate to be her reporter." and "I absolutely loved working with Maria at WESA, Pittsburgh’s NPR station. She was my editor for more than a year, giving me a front-row seat to her excellence across functions: Not only has she mastered the art of radio storytelling; her instincts for engaging digital audiences and managing staff are spot on. Maria thought strategically about expanding our reach both through broadcast and web platforms. As managing editor, she aimed always to broaden the community we serve by providing compelling coverage of important issues. A daunting task for sure, but Maria broke down her vision into actionable steps for colleagues. With me, she helped to develop profiles of the listeners and readers my stories would seek to engage. This exercise refined my focus as I created an economics and business beat at WESA. Maria shared my excitement, and when I hit roadblocks in reporting, writing, or mixing, she consistently suggested viable workarounds. Her tips usually didn’t require much more effort, but I found they led to significant improvements. Maria also effectively coached our entire newsroom in headline writing, which is key to engaging audiences. Early in her tenure at WESA, she started a Slack channel to workshop headlines, and it soon became a fun place to collaborate. Our headlines became more inviting, and our website feels more professional. Our newsroom hadn’t even used Slack before Maria arrived. She gently introduced us to it, and now we always use it. At the same time, Maria was genuinely open to new ideas, with the greatest example being her involvement in diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives at WESA. She approached this often thankless work with humility, never lowering her standards as she and colleagues searched for changes that might actually make a difference. I felt incredibly lucky to be on Maria’s team. Just as she sought to respond to our audience and community’s interests, she cared about my priorities as a reporter. She empowered me to pursue stories that I wanted to tell, and she also knew me well enough to assign work that married my strengths with the daily needs of our station. In the rare instances when I got stuck with a story I could have done without, I was happy to do it for Maria: She had already shown up for me in so many ways."
