The book is about Patrick Mahomes and Kansas City, telling the story of a football-obsessed midwestern metro trying to come back from a past riven by segregation and urban disinvestment. It was lauded by Publishers Weekly in a starred review and praised by the Wall Street Journal as an “illuminating urban history.”

I wrote investigative stories on politics, 2021 Texas winter storm, business, urban issues and more. I reported during pandemic on issues with eviction protections and broke stories about the state’s electric grid and a state legislator’s potential violation of federal law.In 2021, the Associated Press Managing Editors awarded me first place for Sportswriter of the Year in Texas and third place for Reporter of the Year. .

Reported on politics, neighborhood issues, development, entertainment and more, producing written and visual content. Broke stories on shady City Hall officials, 2016 DNC, NBA and so-called “middle neighborhoods,” which have become an issue in Congress.

State College, Pennsylvania Area

Covered Penn State University as on-ground correspondent in State College, winning two Pennsylvania Keystone Press awards and a Pittsburgh Golden Quill and appearing on PBS “NewsHour” and BBC radio. Reported on Sandusky Trial and ensuing Penn State scandal. Broke stories about Board of Trustees and wrote features on how university recovered in scandal’s aftermath.

Reported on high schools and colleges for 400,000-plus circulation newspaper. Wrote investigative articles on sports business and safety issues and personality profiles. Won two Texas Medical Association awards for stories on reforming heat guidelines and concussion protocol in high school sports. Both stories led to policy changes by state governing body.
