About Mark Hammond

My research focuses on the intersections between architecture and urban ageing within the home, community and city, with a specific interest in housing inequality and spatial justice. I recently completed a two-year secondment at the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, where he worked with the GM Ageing Hub to develop research-engaged policy and strategy around housing, planning and ageing.I am is currently principal investigation on 'Co-creating Age-Friendly Social Housing', a three year design-research programme investigating the how older people and social housing providers can collaborate to develop innovative housing and community models. I am also joint PI (w/ Stefan White) in North Manchester Healthy Ageing Neighbourhood, working with Pozzoni Architecture to produce a vision and revised masterplan for a new-built age-friendly neighbourhood. I teach on the Master of Architecture course at MSA, where I am unit lead for Studio 1, 2 and 3 and a member of the &rchitecture atelier.

I am currently Deputy Research Lead for Manchester School of Architecture and teach design studio on the M.Arch course at MSA as M.Arch2 lead for the & atelier.I am currently principal investigator on the Co-Creating Age-Friendly Social Housing programme (£311k, Dunhill Medical Trust), a 30-month participatory action research programme exploring new models of social housing in response to an ageing population. For the 'Manchester Age-Friendly Neighbourhoods' project, part of the Big Lottery 'Ageing Better' programme. MAFN was a participatory design research programme to establish four innovative age-friendly neighbourhood initiatives across Manchester, working with over 1000 older people in the design and delivery of over 100 local projects. The project led to over £300,000 of investment in resident led and designed age-friendly initiatives across Manchester

In 2018 I was seconded to GMCA to work in the GM Ageing Hub team, where I helped to establish the ‘Housing, Planning and Ageing’ workstream and associated research-led policy initiatives. Outcomes of this work included establishing a cross-departmental working group, developing two policy-focused research projects, contributing to regional strategy including the ‘GM Housing Strategy’ and ‘Framework for Age-Friendly Homes in Greater Manchester 2021-24’, and authoring a practitioner guide about ageing and urban design: ‘A Design for Life: Urban Strategies for the Age-Friendly City’.

While undertaking my PhD, I was a research assistant on two smaller research projects, both developed with Manchester City Council. 'Cheetham Hill Urban Living Labs' and 'The Life of the City' both used mapping, surveys and focus groups to understand the different experiences of older people across diverse urban locations, and suggested how policy and strategy might better support them to age in place.

Developed with University of Manchester, Southway Housing Trust and Age-Friendly Manchester (Manchester City Council), the Age-Friendly Old Moat project developed a new model for community-based action planning around issues of urban ageing, based on the WHO Age-Friendly Cities approach. The project has led to significant and ongoing investment in Age-Friendly housing/services in Old Moat, and the model has been adopted as part of Greater Manchester's Ageing in Place programmes ever since.
