Mark Hoffman has been on staff at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel since 1992.He was hired as a picture editor before becoming deputy photo editor when the Milwaukee Journal and Milwaukee Sentinel merged.Needing a break from being in management, he went back to what he loved doing and resumed being a full-time photographer.Before coming to Milwaukee, he was a photo desk supervisor and picture editor at the New York headquarters of The Associated Press.He has been a photojournalist at the Bridgeport Post & Telegram (now the Connecticut Post), the La Crosse (Wis.) Tribune along with internships at Newsday and Detroit News.Stories he has covered include:The threat of zoonotic diseases with reporting in Brazil, Uganda and Kenya.The effect of the global dairy industry on Wisconsin with reporting in Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Canada & Mexico.The plight of Syrian refugees in Jordan and Germany and a Milwaukee doctor’s mission to help them.The environmental effects of oil sanding mining in Alberta, CanadaOther stories include the civil war in El Salvador; the ongoing struggle of grinding poverty and corruption in Haiti, and New York the day after the 9/11 attacks.In addition to the Olympics, he has covered nearly every major sporting event in the U.S. including Super Bowls, NBA Finals, NCAA national championships, US Open Golf & Tennis.He has been the recipient of three grants from the Pulitzer Center for Crisis Reporting.He was part of a team that was honored for its digital environmental reporting in 2016 with an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award for A Watershed Moment: Great Lakes at a Crossroads. It was multimedia project illustrating the damage caused to the Great Lakes by invasive species. It was the first time a newspaper has won the broadcast award.He was also honored with the Dave Boss Award of Excellence in the 46th Annual Pro Football Hall of Fame Photo Contest. His photo titled “Not Gonna Be Denied" was selected by a panel judges as the Photograph of the Year for the 2013 National Football League Season.
