The position was a 6 month research position investigating Big Data within the UK Power Networks industry. The role involved researching Big Data, PMUs, Power Networks and the future impact of new technologies such as smart meters and smart grids. The project culminated in the creation of a White Paper for delivery to HUBNET. The funding was provided by HUBNET.

My PhD project is based within the Energy and Environment group of the EEE department of Strathclyde. My research focus is building prognostic models by utilizing a full scope high fidelity simulator provided by GSE systems. My main tasks have been to create predictive models, present papers, develop failure models, analysis of outcomes and develop an understanding of industrial simulators and there applications. Within this role I have been exposed to a variety of computer languages from MATLAB, Python and R to the specific code and programming used within the GSE simulation environment. Additionally, I have been required to develop knowledge of a range of analytical process’ including neural networks, Bayesian inference, particle filtering, data mining and regression analysis. The outcome of the research is to produce a valid method of prognostic modelling for real time application in the power generation domain, for improving asset management and maintenance decisions.

For the 3 years of my PhD I have also been working as a lab demonstrator for the 2nd year Physics undergraduates. This has involved running experiments, marking and assessing weekly reports, lab talks and formal reports from the students typically for about 16 students a week.
