Profile bio

About Mark Sutton

I am an experienced Manager with learnt and practiced skills in governance, project management, business planning and human resource management at the executive management and leadership level. Until January 2023, I was the Director of the South Australian Outback Communities Authority for a period of twenty-one years. I was accountable to a Board of Management along with a Minister of the Crown for the day-to-day administration of local governance in those parts of remote South Australia where there is no formal local government structure.I am highly competent in the preparation of high-level briefing and reporting material to Board, Ministerial and Cabinet level, and inclusive of Ministerial responses, Board agendas and minutes along with parliamentary submissions. I am fiercely loyal, evidenced by lack of movement in my employment history. However, this lack of movement should not suggest that I was complacent in my previous role, more that I was high functioning and kept abreast of the threats, issues and opportunities facing the organisation. I have also developed a strong EQ approach to management rather than a purely IQ approach; I find that it is easy to manage purely on facts, however if you apply EQ reasoning to management, there is more likelihood the other party will participate, support and own the desired outcome. I am an active firefighter in the Queensland Rural Fire Service and, up until January 2023, was a senior volunteer firefighter in South Australia with over twenty years’ experience. This coupled with over ten years as a South Australian Police Officer allowed me to fully comprehend community functionality and human vulnerabilities; to understand what is important to families and communities at their level. Managing and advocating for communities often brings conflict when you try to implement change, I have developed high level negotiation and conflict resolution skills designed to bring mutually agreed resolution to these conflicts. I was Chair of Regional Development Australia, Far North SA and a Member of Regional Development SA from 2018 to the beginning of 2024. In these roles I developed a strong and practical understanding of the connectivity between regional economic development and regional community sustainability. I believe I have a strong and proven collaborative and inclusive approach to management coupled with very strong stakeholder engagement skills that would benefit any organisation.

Listed skills include Community Development, Infrastructure Management, Emergency Management, Strategic Planning, and 46 others.
