I am a time served Instrument technician, trained by the former British Steel Corporation. I have over 43 years experience, the first 20 years working purely on Instrumentation, the next 16 years in the dual role of Instrumentation and Electrical Technician before returning to my core trade of instrumentation in June 2016.I believe I am a team player and possess a 'can do' attitude. I am able to work equally well on my own or as part of an engineering team. My day to day duties centre around maximising plant availability and reliability by performing routine maintenance tasks and system upgrades, and also by tracing and repairing faults and breakdowns.

Working shifts as both Instrument Technician and Electrical Technician on Scunthorpe's Continuous Casting machines and Basic Oxygen Steelmaking plant as part of a small engineering team attending to plant breakdowns in addition to work on long standing issues and emerging faults. I also become involved in Instrument work passed down by the day engineering teams due to the current lack of time served Instrument personnel.To complement the traditional instrumentation equipment listed later I have gained experience in various types of electrical equipment including.Motor control centres (MCC's) utilizing,Direct on Line motor starter panels.Soft starts.Motor control by inverter drive.Plant sequencing and control by PLC.I also have good working experience of overhead cranes and hoists ranging from a lifting capacity of 5 tonnes to 450 tonnes, controlled by various means from traditional relay logic and oportor to modern Thyristor drives both with and without reversing contactors.Duties.Receiving and prioritising tasks from both production operators or via the SAP system.Safely working to current Management of Work regulations.Searching and organising collection of spare parts as and when required.Isolating and immobilising plant for maintenance work.Feeding back on completed or outstanding work using the SAP system.

During this period I worked as a shift Instrument Technician on Scunthorpe's Continuous Castingmachines which produce a range of semi finished products including Blooms Billets and Slabs cast in various sizes to suit the customers needs. I worked primarily on my own but was also integrated into a small team of Electricians so helped out on electrical tasks as and when required. The equipment I worked on during this period included,DCS and stand alone control systems.Bulk powder transfer systems.Combustion systems incorporating multiple burners and air/gas ratio control via a temperature controller.Weighing systems utilizing strain gauge and pressductor loadcells.Pressure, flow, level, and temperature measurement and control using a wide variety of instruments and control valves.Plant audio system maintenance and repairs.Duties,In addition to receiving, prioritizing, carrying out work, and feeding back my other duties during this time were as follows.Performing full control loop calibration's including transmitters, signal converters, panel indicators, E/P converters and control valves.Quality Assurance calibration's.Plant faults and breakdowns involving instrumentation.During this period I was also involved in numerous TQP (Total Quality Performance) group sessions seeking to improve plant reliability and efficiency through group discussion workshops.

On completing my apprenticeship in September 1983 I made up a 3 person team working purely oninstrumentation in the steelmaking area (BOS and Continuous Casting) I was promoted to Senior craftsman in 1984 and promoted again to Instrument Technician in May 1985. This involved taking what was known as the technicians test which included written exams, practical fault finding tests and a formal interview before a panel of Instrument and Electrical engineers.Duties,As before but also including,Waste gas analysis, analysers, sample conditioning, and waste gas collection equipment.Multiple hopper weighing systems and discharge sequencing.Mass flow measurement and control systems.During this period I spent six months working days within a small team installing new instruments and data collection equipment to BOS plants three induced draught fans. This comprised running and terminating signal cables, mounting and calibrating flow, temperature, pressure, and vibration measuring instruments, mounting and wiring signal conditioners and trip amps, full system commissioning and functional testing before handover.
